Guest post by: Sue Barrett

Article Overview: There are many things written and said about effective sales people, effective leaders, successful entrepreneurs, great teams and so on. Many descriptions are in circulation. There is an overabundance of experts recommending this approach one day and that approach the next. Those of us who want to be effective and successful often follow the advice of those experts however we are at risk of turning ourselves inside out and losing sight of what we are really here to do if we keep trying to bend to the winds and whims of the latest management trends, fads, findings, research, etc.

4 valuable life skills that make for success in sales and any other role

There are many things written and said about effective sales people, effective leaders, successful entrepreneurs, great teams and so on.

I am not against reading widely, continuous learning, adopting new ways and adapting to change as you have probably realised by now.

However, in recent times I have been feeling overwhelmed by too much information and instead found myself opting for a ‘less is more' approach to life.

As I always do, I have been sifting through a lot of information and finding that I am beginning to distill some fundamental truths that hold true whatever the fad or trend of the day.

On my most recent distillation process I have found that I was able to identify four valuable life skills that work very well for me in every situation I have found myself in. You will recognise that these skills are essential to effective selling, and I am sure you won't miss their relevance to all other roles we play, personally and professionally.

So in the spirit of ‘less is more' here are my 4 valuable life skills which continue to serve me very well:

1. The ability to ask good questions

2. The ability to actively listen

3. The ability to receive and give honest feedback

4. The ability to reflect on my actions

I hope they serve you well too. Enjoy your sales week.

Remember everybody lives by selling something.

Hunter or Farmer - Born, Bred or Both? Hunter or Farmer - Born, Bred or Both? - Hello everyone, As a sales recruiter, I meet a variety of sales personalities day in and day out. Recently, I met with one candidate who I would characterize as a "Farmer" i.e. wants to work with exisiting accounts, no cold calling, no prospecting but great customer service, follow up and upselling skills. He was having a hard time finding his next role and he asked about a Business Development role we had - a Hunter role i.e. cold calling, aggressive, no (or minimal) account base, territory management, target oriented. He asked if he could apply and said, "I can CHANGE! I cna learn how to hunt. I can do it." My question to you is: Can someone switch roles? Can a farmer be a hunter? Can a hunter be happy just farming? Thoughts?
Bright future who start early Bright future who start early - You are at a pivotal point in your life. You may not realize it, but your mindset is great. Most kids your age are thrilled to get an under appreciated job working for some company to make a little spending cash. However, those who look to get into the business side early in life are usually the ones who become successful. What you do now, might not make you a rich kid, but you will pick up much more valuable experience that you can cash in, down the road. I would suggest you learn to make websites right away. It is a valuable tool that you will benefit from. You make a little cash making websites - the more experienced you get, the more money you can make. You don't need too much money to get started - seeing as you already have access to a computer. Making a website will get you thinking about business in general and it will lead to marketing, finance, and profit.
Franchise Choice Franchise Choice - I would: .Spend time evaluating what my passions in life were and how i could take more time to be doing those things - work or social or family .spend time evaluating what would help me get to where i wanted to be - not concentrating on moving away from something i.e a job . Look at what skills I have and where i needed training i.e sales.business management/retail management e.t.c - what ever is needed. I would then invest in myself and acquire those skills on the open market from reputable training providers . Set up my own business doing something i loved . Invest the money saved into me, sales and marketing and mentoring from succesful people who had done what i was trying to do.
What skills are needed to open a franchise? What skills are needed to open a franchise? - I'm not a franchising expert by any means, but it would appear as if many franchisors require at least one owner to work at his/her business. So my question is: What skills are needed to open a franchise? And more importantly, how many franchise owners actually take the time to get the proper training/education required? Do they simply attend a few college courses on sales, retail or business management, etc? And does this actually make a difference in a franchise's success rate?
