Goal Setting - The Flip Side; Why We Don't Achieve Them

What’s Stopping You? (from reaching your goals)

Over the years coaching salespeople, I’ve come across quite a number of reasons for missing goal. Small ones, big ones, financial objectives, personal aspirations; you name a goal - I’ll show you someone who has achieved it AND someone who hasn’t.

We all have our own deep dark secrets about why we aren’t doing the things we know we need to. People have shared with me over the years lots of different reasons; here is my Top 10 Countdown.

10. A skill set, piece of knowledge, or expertise were missing and gaining “it” was missing from the plan.

9. Inside they didn’t believe they deserved it.

8. Achieving the goal would set a higher expectation of their future achievement (and that is scary).

7. Milestones were missed and they gave up instead of regrouping.

6. Old habits are easy to fall back into.

5. They didn’t visualize what it would be like once they’d achieved their goal and couldn’t get excited about the work to be done.

4. They figured out in the middle of the process, that their objective had changed - so abandoned the original goal AND set a new one.

3. The bite size pieces they had cut to achieve the goal were too big and they gave up.

2. It wasn’t their goal in the first place, but one they felt they “should” care about.

And the #1 reason salespeople do NOT achieve the goals they’ve set for themselves is (imaginary drum roll please)...

the reward for reaching their goal DOES NOT outweigh the pain of change

Your objective for the week is to determine what your reasons might be, what is holding you back from achieving the big audacious goals you’ve set for yourself.... or the micro-goals that would propel you forward.

I would then make a gentle suggestion to reevaluate: your goal, the plan, and yourself to figure out what it will take to overcome the obstacles you’ve built. Plus set a few rewards for your own good behavior - most of us are willing to beat ourselves up for NOT achieving something, yet have difficulty celebrating success!

What could that look like?

Enjoy the journey and achieve your goals.

Re: Drop out Billionaire Re: Drop out Billionaire - I reveived Bill Bartmann's DVD "9 Steps To Achieve Any Goal" as part of my monthly pack from Success University a few months back. It is a great presentation. I've watched it several times but not for a while so I'll view it again in the coming week. He is one of the greats. Like the best success mentors, he speaks with authority because he has come through much tribulation. His program sounds like a great bargain at $100 a year.

Re: Did you reach your goal this year? Re: Did you reach your goal this year? - I finally realized the subconcious mind achieves LARGE goals just as easily as small goals. All the RIGHT people are now showing up to manifest my BIG GOALS now. It's been interesting and worth sharing. [Side Note: Be prepared for them when they come. Some ppl think it's too good to be true.] Take it anyway....
