A New Year in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Looking toward the upcoming year, many of you have made decisions to reduce the number of sales reps and employees in your respective organizations. Congratulations, you have cut out some of the fat from your organization. The bean counters and stock markets should probably be happy with you.

Everyone has heard the saying, "if it ain't broke don't fix it?" One of my favourite bosses used to say, "if it ain't broke then break it." In today's business environment adaptivity is the key to survival. Let this blog be a wake up call for the pharmaceutical industry. There are fundamental flaws in your business model. It is broken! If you think that cutting people is going to fix the fundamental issues then you will be in the same boat next year and the year after that.

Have you considered whether your business model actually makes sense? Have you asked your customers what they want? Do your sales reps actually make a difference when calling on their physicians?

Have you asked yourself why physicians don't want to see reps any more? Have you asked physicians how you can better address their needs? I was at my doctor's office a few weeks ago and we got talking about the Pharma industry? I asked "what do her reps do when they come by the office". My doctor told me that the rep drops off samples and sometimes review papers. I then asked if she could name any of her reps and the answer I got was "no".

Given that there are few new products launches do we still need detailers who drop off samples and make no connection with the doctor? Does your selling model allow your reps to sell? Does it encourage your reps to make a difference?

Presently pharmaceutical companies spend a considerable amount of money having front line sales managers to support their reps. How many FLM actually understand what their role is? How many go out with a rep and at the end of the day make no impact on from a coaching perspective?

One thing I learned early in my career is that sales/profitability hides many evils. As you look to improve the profitability of your organization here are some of the evils you need to confront when developing a sustainable business model.

  1. How can you create moments of magic for your physicians so that they want to see your reps again?
  2. How can your sales people actually have an impact on their physicians prescribing behaviour?
  3. How can you develop front line sales managers who can have an impact on their sales team and physicians?
The one caution I would make to many of you is not to make the same mistake of going back to the same consulting organizations that have told you in the past to simply add additional sales force. The same consultants that create bi-ads and tri-ads (they must be m-ad).What this industry needs is creative approaches to solving the fundamental evils that are inherent in the detailing business model.

If you know the workings of this industry do you not already know a few companies within the industry? I would start there and ask them a few questions. Two of the questions you can ask them (companies you already know exist) are: 1. Who are your competitors? 2. Does you company participate in any tradeshows, Conferences or belong to an association. These would be the starting point I would take. This will allow you to become a "niche" provider to one industry before you begin to plan another. It's also a great way to become established within complementary industries. e.g. If within your current network you know a defense contractor that is within the body armor industry then that defense contractor knows pretty much all their competitors and knows of the major tradeshows that happen through out the year. Your first year could be focused on just marketing and becoming the go-to consultant within this industry. You second year you could start looking into complementary industries to the body armor industry that needs security consulting e.g. firearms and so on.

Everyone has different skillsets Everyone has different skillsets - Hi Kevin It totally depends on the persons confidence with handling the technical side of the business such as web hosting. For example I tend to make a profit of $50 - $100 a year for handling one of my clients (business management industry) web hosting requirements. However if I didn't help him out he would most certainly spend more than $50 - $100 of his time during the year trying to figure out FTP settings, name servers, configuration options etc so it's more economical for him to pay a little extra and not have to worry about it. It's also something that differs from person to person and the industry they are working in. If the person is computer literate and are confident in learning new technical skills on the computer I would be confident they could handle their own web hosting etc and I know of entrepreneurs who do this. For me, I would say I am the same when it comes to servicing my vehicle. If I had to do it myself I could save a little extra money but it's not worth the risk that I could do something wrong and have to spend more time fixing the problem I created. I'd rather just pay someone a little extra to do the job efficiently and correctly.
Re: Art of Marketing Re: Art of Marketing - Differences, at some basic level, will always level the playing field - for the better. Take a look at the franchise fast food industry. Yes, the top concepts are there year after year, but if you take a step back, smaller concepts are always gaining market share. People love fast food. But people also love variety. Apply this to the Art of Marketing, there is a customer base everytime - however, its more how much of an artist you are in your customers eyes, not yours keep in mind.
I beg to differ... I beg to differ... - Scott said "The SBA will require you have at least 2 years in the same industry as the business you want to open. Banks will want more money down (30%) and real property as collateral, and will probably charge higher rates and require a 5 year baloon". Not true with the right SBA lender! SBA Lenders educated in the franchise industry not only do not require experience as mandatory but can require as little as 12-25% down, and will under-collateralize the loan and give 10-25 years (depending upon the franchise, type of loan and what's involved in the loan) ie: start-up or acquisition, is real estate involved in the purchase? How much available collateral?, your credit & net worth...etc.). It's dependent upon many things, but the lenders we work with do not give less than 10 year terms and there are no pre-payment penalties and don't typically ask for more than 25% down. They also count/ credit most out of pocket expenses toward loan down payment such as franchise fees, lawyer & accountant fees, incorporation fees, deposit to a land lord (to secure a location)...etc. There are also ways to protect your assets and prevent yourself from fully collateralizing your SBA loan.
