Why do you go to work?

Why do you go to work? Is it for the enjoyment, to keep busy or another specific reason? For years, I have been asking people why they go to work. Everywhere in the world I get the same answer. What do you think that answer is?

If you said money, you are right. However, the answer is wrong, even though it reflects the belief of the rest of the world!

The secret is no-one should ever accept their first answer or the first answer from anyone else. To the extent that you or they think they are being honest, they are not. You must apply the rule of 3+. The rule is to question the answer, question the answer again, and then question the answer further, until eventually; you will get to the real truth.

Give it a try. You go to work to make money. Make money to do what? Do you want a certain lifestyle? What type of a lifestyle? Do you want to fulfil your family's needs? What are those needs? Do you want to have a home and a car and to take vacations? What kind of a home, car and vacation? We can go on and on.

The bottom line is that you go to work to fulfil your needs. However, you have probably met your basic needs, and you are really going to work to fulfil your dreams, as each of us has different dreams and desires.

Once you realize this, then work is nothing but a stepping stone to help you get where you want to go. The real problem is: do you know where you want to go?

What are your dreams? Do you know where you want to be, what you want to do or to have in three, five, ten or even twenty years?

Can you imagine what life would be like if we could not dream? What would the world look like? Where would we be today? It all starts with a dream.

Our dreams become our desires. It is that burning desire combined with the belief that you can do it that provides you with the motivation to make your dream a reality. When you release that passion inside of you to accomplish your dream, nothing will stand in your way.

Think back to a dream or a desire you once had. It could have been to graduate, to travel to an exotic destination, to acquire a particular item, to be a certain type of person or even to find a spouse, a home or a certain type of friend or acquaintance. Did you not live that dream?

But to live that dream, you had to pay a price. That price may have been going to work.

Please remember, work is nothing but a stepping stone to help you get where you want to go. First, decide where you want to go, what is that long term dream, and how can you use your job to help get you there?

When your job and your dream are connected, you get more excited about going to work. You are more motivated, and you will realize your dream.

Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You - Hi Evan, Thanks for this post, I found the article very interesting and I do regularly work 12 hours or more but that is a total of my day job then Internet work when I get home, I must say that I agree with Michelle that I only feel that I work at my day job and my Internet work I really enjoy although some nights I go to bed absolutely shattered. There is an old saying that I think I may have used here before but it is something like “If you enjoy what you do then you never do a days work in your life”. If I ever get to the stage when I work form home full time then this would be the case for me because I love this work and would do it full time from home tomorrow if I could. regards, Mal.
Home Office vs Rented Office Home Office vs Rented Office - Another advantage to having a home office is the low overhead expenses. My monthly office costs would be increased by 300-400% if I had to rent an office. THis allows me to pass those savings on to my clients and also decreases the financial stress of being in business. I appreciate the savings that a home office gives me and none of my clients mind. Its not for everyone and I understand that. I have friends who work from home and they have lots of distractions. I get far more work done since I work from home, although I do work much longer hours, but that's my choice at this point. I wouldn't want to work until 10 or 11 pm and then have to travel home, but this arrangement makes it work for me. Shri
Working Environment Working Environment - Probably you should have a separate place and good work environment, its very essential to have work focused atmosphere and also you should enjoy whatever work you do.
Working With Family Working With Family - It depends on your relationship. I've worked with both of my sisters, my brother in law, and my girlfriend on different business ventures. They are smart, talented people who compliment the skill sets that I have. I also trust them and know that they work very hard. There are also a few members of our Mastermind Groups who are in business with their spouses and they love the opportunity to work and spend every day with each other. It doesn't always work out and you have to ask yourself if your personalities will work well together or not but I would recommend exploring the opportunity if you see a fit.
Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? - I don't give myself a set amount of days off. If I'm sick then I don't work. If I want to take a vacation, I just do it. If I have something more important to do than work, I do it. If I just don't feel like working, I don't. Yes, it hurts productivity but that doesn't bother me. A big part of the reason I am an internet marketer is so I can have the freedom to do things like that. I don't want to limit myself to a certain number of days off. That would feel too much like a regular job. There are also plenty of weekends and holidays that I work. It just depends on whether or not I am doing anything else. Basically I try to at least do a little work every day but if I don't then I don't. No big deal.
