The Importance of Persuasion in Entrepreneurship

People skills, people skills, people skills. I wouldn't trade them for the world. The ability to deal with people is priceless. Here are the true, trusted though sparsely utilized tips for successful persuasion as an entrepreneur:

Get Down to the Person's Level

You must always speak to people, whether they are clients or everyday individuals as if they were human beings. That doesn't mean that you become friends with a potential client; you always remain professional. However, speak to them as you would speak to anybody else.

Remember, the person on the other line, when all is said and done, has life concerns, a mortgage to pay and may or may not like their job. They are just people. Think this way and you can connect with other individuals. Connection gains trust. Connection gains business.

Be Energetic, Upbeat and Excited

It's a firm truth. A potential client will have more faith in you if you sound upbeat, thus giving off a vibe that you are passionate about what you do and work hard. Passion can be heard loudly and clearly through a phone. As a result, to the potential client, this attitude will make them want to give you a chance and, subsequently write you a check. If you come across as the vendor who "does this every day" to your prospect, the business will be lost. If you don't woo them, somebody else will.

If It's True, Come Out and Say It

Don't beat around the bush. Don't give expectations that could not be met. However, if you execute and are good at what you do, say so. While other vendors that the individual calls will give them a sales pitch that all sound the same and is the same song a dance, you come out and say what you want to say. If you want the potential client's business, tell them. "We can work hard for you and produce. I want to take this account on." Who else is saying that?

Don't Be Negotiated Down

You should have enough of a compelling reason as to why the voice on the other line of the phone should pay what they pay for your services. Allowing the other end to control the conversation and take discount jabs at you is the wrong way to approach new client acquisition. The other day, a woman called my agency and was just like any new client. She seemed smart and with it

Learn How to Write

If people perceive you to be intelligent, they will follow you and listen to you. Improper grammar on an email reflects poorly on one. Write well, always proofread and begin writing for trade journals or their blogs, etc. This not only gives on practice writing, it gives you credibility. If you know about a subject, don't sit in front of the TiVo, site in front of the computer and begin expressing your expertise through words. On the backend, for your business website, if you position your articles the right way, your search engine rankings will increase and increase.

All of this is great if you can produce what you say you can. Overpromise and I promise you will swiftly acquire a bad reputation.
