Okay - here we go:
# Drink two glasses or orange juice each day (according to a recent study at the University of Alabama this helps stop the secretion of stress hormones. But, please drink them slowly - enjoy them - don't just gulp them down and get back to the battle!
# Attach a “trigger” to your phone. This can be anything from a green dot to a cartoon character – something to remind you to take a deep breath before answering. This calms you – and makes you sound more confident. You might even choose one of the many small, cuddly, cartoon characters you can buy that stick to all surfaces
# Give yourself a quick action to undertake. Tie this into your own interests, hobbies etc. This can be anything e.g. to list the winners of the last 5 Australian Grand Prix; or recall ten Elvis hit songs; or list the movies of Meg Ryan etc. The idea is that this is a fun test for you – and therefore helps relieve any stress you are currently feeling by diverting your mind from the situation
# If you’re feeling really stressed at work – go to a travel shop and pick up some holiday brochures. Or, go on line and look at some of the destinations you'd really like to visit. Imagine yourself there - how you'd feel, what you'd do etc. Even the thought of choosing and planning a break (you might never take) will cheer you up!
# Have a stress-buster device. This can be a squeezy toy – or even one of the desk-top punch-bags that are now on the market. For example, I have my stress-bustin’ squeezy-banana thanks to my friends at the newspaper in Coffs Harbour in Australia!
# Whenever someone upsets, annoys, frustrates or infuriates you – simply breathe deeply and say: “I forgive you for your sins”. Depending on the individual irritant, you might only want to say this when no-one else is around! But, the idea is that you take a physical action to “let go” of the stressor!
# Have a stiff drink! Hold on – there’s a catch – have a stiff drink... of nice cold water. For some reason, still beyond the understanding even of psychologists – this works! You might even consider opening a water-bottling plant producing "Eau de Stress-Bustin"?!
So, there you are some ways to reduce stressful situations. And, if they don’t work for you – don’t blame me. If you do, I’ll get stressed! Go find some others that do! As Will Rogers said: "People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing". Or, how about this Korean proverb: "If you kick a stone in anger, you'll hurt your own foot". So, please use these four articles to think about - and devise an action plan for dealing with - your stressful moments
