DecisionMaking Dealing with the Avoidance Factors Part Two

DecisionMaking Dealing with the Avoidance Factors Part Two

Wasting time making unimportant or irrelevant decisions – or not allowing others to make decisions they are perfectly capable of making. This is a special "talent" of the "I am the only one capable of doing anything right" type of manager or leader!

Worrying about what others might think of, or react to, the decision. You need to prepare for likely reactions – you don’t simply avoid them Letting others decide for you when it should be your decision – thus having someone to “blame” at a later stage - a gift of the insecure or paranoid leader Making “decisions” which are not within your authority – no matter how necessary. If you aren’t able to put it into practice, then what’s the point in deciding?

Trying to “change” things which simply cannot be changed e.g. company policy, legal constraints etc.

A need to solve every problem - when members of your team or colleagues are often quite capable of working it out for themselves. Your job isn't to spend all your time holding other people's hands Relying too much on intuition – it has its place, but only as a compliment to rational processes Paying no attention to intuition – it’s only Mr Spock who can decide everything through simple, cold logic! But, intuition should not overcome rational thinking A desire to play it safe – how many people end up in more trouble through this – than by taking the occasional, carefully-calculated chance?

Backing down in tough situations – as the song says: “The higher you build your barriers, the taller I will grow”

Bending to the will or needs of others to the detriment of your own – you are as entitled to attend to your own needs as anyone else So, there we have twenty reasons why decisions are "avoided". Take the chance to recognize and deal with any of these that are part of your make-up. If you have any comments or questions, please email me at gordon@thevenworks.com - I'd like to hear from you
