Looking for Luck - do you work at it?
Looking for Luck - do you work at it?
EXPECT TO BE LUCKY
Recently, I was walking along a street beside some local shops. An old lady came towards me. I’d never met her before. It was a glorious, warm, sunny day. Literally not a single cloud in the sky. She looked at me and said: “They say it’ll rain on Thursday”. This appeared to be the highlight of her week! So, are you like that? Just waiting for fortune to come along and kick the legs from underneath you? As psychologists have been known to say: “Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy”
CONTROL UNLUCKY EMOTIONS
These include anger, resentment, shyness and the like. Because, if you are prone to displays of such emotions, you are probably dissuading people who otherwise might be willing to help you. They also lower your self-esteem. To control them, the first step is to recognise and understand the conditions under which they are likely to occur – and then work out how to “un-trigger” your response
LOOK FOR "LUCKY VREAKS"
Many years ago, Ray Kroc was selling to the food trade in the mid-west of America when he had a terrific hamburger in an outlet owned by two brothers. He persuaded them to let him franchise the idea. Their name – the MacDonald brothers of course!
MAKE YOUR OWN "LUCKY BREAKS"
I sent a manual to a prospective Customer recently – before they had bought the programme. This person emailed me back saying “trusting aren’t you”. I hope she meant it as a compliment. If you trust people to help you develop your thoughts and ideas (rather than assuming they’ll steal them) – then perhaps a reasonable idea will become a winning one! Let’s face it, if you simply keep your ideas to yourself, then nothing can ever happen with them anyway!
BECOME AN "ENVY-FREE ZONE"
Yeah, I know, it’s always someone less deserving than me that wins the Lottery! And that promotion should have been mine. First of all, neither of these events are automatically good news (it’s not unknown to find miserable millionaires). Secondly, you have no control over the first – random chance - type of events. For the second, you need to work out how you can be better-prepared the next time a chance comes up – and your bosses will be more impressed by that than by you moping away in a corner somewhere!
BE POSITVELY-POSITIVE
Inwardly – mainly – otherwise you might be too much for some folk! But, imagine a friend of yours has a problem, and a group of you are talking about it. How much of the comments, advice etc. is negative (and therefore helping nothing more than their on-going feeling of sorry-for-myself)? Look for positive options, take the conversation towards the future. As one victim of a house fire once said: “I’ve sent in my tax returns, and all the evidential paperwork went up in flames. So, how the hell can they prove me wrong now!”
So - good luck - but better luck if you work at it!

The first is the most obvious – but often the most difficult to accept…
