Motivation Key Question One Do you allow boredom to set in

Motivation Key Question One Do you allow boredom to set in

Of course, a better question might be: "How do you avoid boredom setting in?" There can be a danger that, each week or month, your team simply carry on doing exactly the same tasks as the last time. Now, there is no way you can totally avoid this – that’s the process of work. However, there is nothing to stop you finding additional “challenges” to add to the interest or variety of their role. This doesn’t simply mean - for example in sales - that you increase their targets, call rates or the like So, what might you find for people to do? Well, this could range from chairing one of your meetings; to looking at ways to cut costs in a key business area. Equally, you might challenge them to come up with innovative advertising ideas or packages. But, that’s you. And that’s a danger. Motivation isn’t just a “top-down” activity. How about asking your people what challenges they would like to set for themselves?

Even if you don’t have a lot of cash to spend, you do need to find ways to reward these new achievements. Obviously, a genuine “thank you” (this doesn’t mean an impersonal e-mail several weeks later!) is a powerful starting point. But, what other rewards can you offer – small prizes or tokens of thanks are always welcome. Especially if you take the time to reward in line with people’s personal interests. The standard “bottle of wine” might be fine for many; but equally a gift token for a local garden centre might be much more welcome to some. Or, booking a month’s free ironing - or a car valeting service - if such a business is available locally! You could even create a “rewards list” that people can choose from!

POINT TO REMEMBER You can never motivate another person. Motivation comes from within. As a leader, you role is to provide the environment or conditions that allow people to feel motivated within themselves. And, thiscan be equally as true for your Customers as your staff
