Do Over

Guest post by: Geoffrey Canavan

Article Overview: When somebody pushes your buttons, instead of a knee-jerk reaction, take a deep breath and take control of your response. It doesn’t matter whether you burn the toast, miss the deadline or find out you have cancer, how you react is your call.

Do Over

Regain control of your reactions and free yourself from self-defeating patterns.

Pay attention to your patterns today and notice what triggers you are allowing to dictate your behavior. Write them down as you identify them.

For instance, if your partner is in a bad mood in the morning do you allow this to set the tone for your day? If the elevator is slow, does the frustration you feel spill over into your interactions with your colleagues? If your teenager is giving you grief, do let their attitude color yours?

There is a tiny gap between very action and your reaction to it and in that gap you have the power to choose.

Consciously slow down your reaction time.

When somebody pushes your buttons, instead of a knee-jerk reaction, take a deep breath and take control of your response. It doesn't matter whether you burn the toast, miss the deadline or find out you have cancer, how you react is your call.

Surrender ownership of your patterns and triggers. They are not you. Break the cycle of ‘poor me' thinking.

Treat every moment as a new beginning.

Let go of all past mistakes and move on.

Choose again.

Make a conscious decision to rise above the traps of day-to-day interaction.

Beware the temptation of allowing life and others to continuously get you down.

Choose again with certainty of purpose in the knowledge that every storyline within your experience is a key, an opportunity to personal freedom.

See all experiences as building blocks to a castle of strength.
