Today's rant - 3 pet peeves

My 3 biggest pet peeves I hear TV Account Executives and TV Sales Managers say every day:

  1. “Right of first refusal” – in other words, you get to turn this rotten proposal down before anyone else gets to turn it down! How about “Right of first acceptance” or “First right to renew” instead?
  2. “I know how busy you are – thank you for your time” at the start to a meeting – in other words, I probably don’t have much value so I need to thank you in advance for wasting your time! How about starting the meeting with what would interest your client – phrases like “there is a multi-million dollar opportunity we have uncovered” or “your goal is to increase market share by 1% and we have discovered a way in which you can” or “let’s talk about selling more F150’s” or “it appears you have some new competition moving your way and we may be able to help you keep them at bay” or something that lets your customer know her time is about to be well spent.
  3. “I’m just checking” as a voicemail, email or conversation starter. In other words, I have nothing new to say, I’m all out of knowledge, I’ve given you everything I’ve got so it’s your turn to tell me something. How about being additive? Letting the customer know you are still thinking about her needs? How about being a wealth of information and a continuous resource? How about “I found this article addressing the same issues we talked about” or “here’s a campaign in (another market) you may be interested in” or “what issue did I not address that remains a concern for you?” You are there to continually add to the relationship, not to check in on them!
Done ranting for today! I’m sure there are others that bug you – please tell us what they are. Your turn to rant!!

Bad books Bad books - One of my pet peeves: I really, [i:3gjt67s5]really [/i:3gjt67s5]hate those "franchise" books like The __________ For Dummies, or The Idiot's Guide to ______________. The titles offend me, and the way they're written (yes, I have looked at a couple), in a "yes we know you're not a dummy but we'll talk to you like you are, anyway" manner, get on my nerves. So any business books coming out of those franchises.... I never look at. I'm also not too sure about those "gimmick" books - leadership skills of Attila the Hun, or of The Sopranos (how sad that someone actually thought it might be amusing to write a book about the leadership skills of characters in a TV show based on the Mafia...)
Re: Watch What you Read Re: Watch What you Read - I agree. i believe more video's should be like Jeffery Gitomers video's under his Sales rant. They are typically not more than 3 minutes. His model seems to be; 1. Main Message (or Point) 2. Example 3. Next steps to put it into Action take away the extra "blabber" and you've got viewers that will come back.
Writing articles Writing articles - Well...I don't think this is the proper forum to ask this question, but I'll give a shot at answering it. First, we need to know so much more information! How many words does each article have to be? If the main article that you pay for can be a thousand words, and if several topics are covered, then you just take each topic and break it out and reword it/rewrite it more closely for that topic. I'm not sure the younger generation these days would recognized bad grammar, bad spelling, and bad arguments if they saw them... [pause here to prevent myself from going off on a rant about our educational system] but anyone over the age of 30 probably/hopefully would, and would care about it! And always remember you get what you pay for.
Re: Search Engine Optimization Guide for All Re: Search Engine Optimization Guide for All - I agree with bizwebideas that it is QUALITY content that counts. What baffles me is the amount of time some people spend trying to get out of actually writing quality articles by using "article spinners" and all that junk. If you use your loaf, you can write a 450 word article much more quickly and of much better quality than it takes you to spin a horrible article that is of no use to man or beast. Anyway, thanks for the SEO and article posting tips, and excuse my rant!
Re: Invoicing Re: Invoicing - Thanks guys! So much to think about! I think... [quote:1t2qr50i]paid 50% deposit and 50% at completion[/quote:1t2qr50i] Is a good idea, Im currently invoicing when work is complete, then asking for payment after 30 days, if payment hasnt been received by day 30, I send out another reminder to pay within 7 days or else. But going to court under a certain amount isnt worth the hassle, I wish some companies would get there act together (rant over). Also offering 2% discount Net 10 days is also good too! [quote:1t2qr50i]Do you really need these clients anyway?[/quote:1t2qr50i] Very true but sometimes its easy money for the work involve, I guess its just getting the balance right! Thanks Kevin for your example, very clear and to the point, Im sure I will be implementing this in the future.
