Today's remark - it starts with you

Your “self talk” and your attitude is your destiny. And your attitude affects the destiny of all those around you and sends ripples into the universe.

Today's remark - when you talk like a commodity you become one

When you enthusiastically and confidently provide solutions you become indispensable. However, when you talk like a commodity you become one.

Today’s remark – to not understand is to be crushed

I hear so many say they want to get into Management positions but I seldom hear anyone say they want to be a Leader. You might ask what the difference is.

Today’s remark – silence the lizard

WE ARE ALL CAPABLE OF GREAT AND ORIGINAL IDEAS AND ADDING VALUE.We used to be able to get by “just doing our job” but those days are gone. Our job, and our obligation, is to transform our TV stations and our industry. It is to create a new business model for broadcasters including how we serve our viewers, digital product users and our advertisers.

Today's remark - real questions or just budgets

2013 is just around the corner and, like most TV Sales Reps, you probably have been so consumed with 4Q and annuals you really haven’t THOUGHT much about your goals and execution plans for next year. Sure, you may have a list of your accounts and what you think you can get in 2013 but let’s dive deeper for you as well as them. Let’s start with you. Here are some questions you may want to ask yourself –

Today’s remark – the incredible, remark-able team

Ever notice how you performed better for some managers than others? Of course you have. Ever really tried to analyze why? Here are a few possibilities-

Today’s remark – “eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak”

The best presentations don’t feel like presentations at all. As Hans Hofmann, the German-born American abstract expressionist painter said, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” My observation is most of us in broadcast are pretty bad at creating great presentations. However, really good presentations, no matter what the format, are remark-able.

Today’s remark – next steps?

I recently sat in by phone on a TV Sales Department meeting and at the end I asked for “next steps.” There was silence and I could sense attendees looking at each other wondering what I was talking about. If you are having meetings that aren’t moving your department or team forward with purpose why are you having them?

Today's remark - you screwed up

Anyone else out there dwell on mistakes? I know I do and, oftentimes, they keep me up at night. No one beats me up better than I do! I’m working on realizing I am human, I make mistakes and so do you. So how do we move on? Here are some quick suggestions:

Today's remark - PowerPoint RANT

If you have attended any of my sessions you have heard my PowerPoint rant. Now, if you choose, you get to read it! Why do so many TV Station AEs continue to think PowerPoint is a series of note cards?? I see it every day and so do you. The presentation is for your audience – they can’t read and listen at the same time. It is impossible and you are confusing them. Well, actually, no you are not. They make a decision – they tune you out or they are reading (assuming they are interested in your material which is a HUGE assumption). If they are reading you have become completely dispensable. If that was your goal may I suggest another line of work?!! As I say all the time – THE PRESENTATION IS YOU! Not the PowerPoint!! Here are some suggestions:
