Perceiving Victory
Perceiving Victory
Sun Tzu
Anyone can see victory when it’s obvious. In business, it’s not always obvious! When you can see victory where everyone else sees defeat, that’s a big win!
Victory can be a matter of perception. An obvious victory might come when you exploit a boom market. When conditions are difficult you’ve got to find or create your victory when everyone else’s head is in the sand.
During difficult economic times a lot of people do stick their heads in the sand. This is particularly true in business where the mentality can easily shift to a protectionist mindset. “Let’s survive the storm!”
Can you keep your head up and look for new opportunities even in the middle of the storm? Is it a greater risk to try and keep moving forward? Is it really more prudent to stick your head in the sand like the ostrich?
The ostrich might think he’s OK as he can’t see the danger around him, but remember his hind parts are still sticking straight up in the air ready for a proverbial ass-kicking!
Victory can also be a matter of perception as you may have to declare your own victory when everyone else thinks you’re going down. You may have to trumpet smaller victories as you fight to regain ground and prepare for larger wins down the road.
When times get tough there really are only two clear choices:
Quit.
Keep moving.
The only way to victory is to keep moving!
