Article Overview: A 2006 Report made the following statement: "Designing and operating multiple supply networks to meet the needs of specific market segments--supply chain innovation and the use of multiple supply chains will be important to future revenue and market share growth." Based on your own experience is this an accurate assessment? If yes, why? If no, why?

That hardly sounds like a recommended approach at an organization level. One has to take a holistic view and optimize at the global level rather than take view about efficiencies at each individual unit. The reason being that there is no guarantee of all individually efficient supply-chains adding up to a global optimal at the organization level. So, when one is not efficient/optimal at the global level, there is no way one can be market leader etc. This search for the globally optimal situation has to be a concious process.

What is interesting is that this "assessment" appeared in a report that was written by the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), CAPS and AT Kearney last year. Much like you, I shared similar reservations that were outlined in part 3 of of my 7 part series Dangerous Supply Chain Myths.

Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
Survey the Landlord - Terry, my suggestion is simple but powerful - Survey. Survey Landlords and find out what is important to them. By doing this it does two things: 1. You will find out trends/under-operated services that Landlords are currently unsatisfied with = your client will be able to fulfill 2. You are infact Marketing your clients services by doign this because when you are approaching your landlords it not a sales pitch and they have someone to clear their frustrations with. Then when you approach them after a month (when you've put your numbers together and identified services that are most important) you can remind them of the survey and share with them the results. At this point you can end with an offer to use your clients services to manage their property. I use this method with my clients who are looking for new services to develop in thier markets. It's simple but powerful.
