Competent Jerk versus Lovable Fool? (Network Member Question)
As human beings I am certain that we all have at one point in time or another fallen into either one of these two categories.
Your question reminds me of a story I had once read about Willard Scott the famed weatherman.
Early in his career, Willard worked for a boss whom he considered to be both unreasonable and incompetent. In fact the acrimony between the two was so great that Willard and his partner's hit program was moved to what was affectionately called the "graveyard shift" time slot.
Willard was of course furious and came within a breath of quitting. (Think what that might have done to his career given its eventual course to stardom.)
Instead he made the decision to buckle down and made the best of a difficult situation ultimately taking his program to the number one spot at the station.
Not long afterwards, he and his wife attended a company function in which his nemesis' wife was also present. After talking with her for a short time Willard found her to be a lovely, intelligent and personable woman. He concluded that if a woman like this could be married to his boss, his boss could not be as bad as he thought. From that moment on he made a concentrated effort to both understand and build a relationship with his boss. In essence he recognized that he too had contributed to the tension and took responsibility for making an effort to improve their rapport.
Over a period of time he and his boss developed a close and lasting friendship, which even today (many decades later) is one of the best and strongest relationships Willard has ever had.
The moral of the story is that rarely do we see the real person behind the outward or public-facing persona. And when we consider our own shortcomings in the equation, we should realize that we have a part to play in either making a relationship better or making it worse.

Do Women Play the Stock Market?
- I have my eye on a few stocks....which the Motley Fool claims are going to skyrocket in price in the next year or so...
Unfortunately I don't have the funds to [i:3v7573zi]really [/i:3v7573zi]play the market... a hundred shares here and there are the best I'll be able to manage...
Right now I've got a hundred shares in Odyssey Marine - a group that goes around hunting for sunken treasure ships... they've found one but are in dispute with the Spanish government about it...
Shares are currently at $5.70, I bought it at $6.50.... my dad says it'll never go any higher because the company simply has too many shares out... but I bought it for the romance of the thing more than anything else (they weren't even mentioned by Motley Fool, I just came across them accidently!)
So my question is, ladies, do you invest in the stock market, and if so, do you do it to "make big money", or merely as a way of earning for the future.
Re: Dealing with businesses that won't pay...
- [quote="TheAnonymousMan":39fp5wcr]What would you do in my situation? I have thought about saying "Would you mind paying at least ONE of my invoices first?" but it would most likely sour the relationship as he has told me "the business is trying to get some income quickly as you know so could you do this job to help me out" but this time I'm not quite convinced.
The last invoice was for their web hosting and I could easily turn off their business by the click of a mouse but I know that would definitely turn things sour.[/quote:39fp5wcr]
Hi TheAnonymousMan,
Like the old saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me..." So I wouldn't give these guys the opportunity to "fool" you a 3rd time with another empty promise. Turning off their business may cause things to get very ugly, so don't do that just yet. Try explaining to them first how you can't do anymore work for them at the moment until you see some form of payment because you're tight on cash too. Say you're busy working for "paying customers" as you need the money for Xmas. If they pull the pity routine on you, you should use it back on them.
10 best franchises to get involved
- My advice is:
1) Go to the library and start reading business books (accounting, finance, etc.)
2) Go to your local community college and enroll in night classes
3) Join the local Chamber of Commerce
4) Network / Network / Network -- through the above sources.
Once you have spent two years doing the above, then look for a 55 - 60 year old business person that is looking to reduce their time in the business. Then you can work on a sweetheart financing option.

Trent - the new category is "Social Network and Media" which was put in to compliment the Online Businesses category that currently exists.
Overall the new categories are:

- Review My...
- Social Network and Media
- Brags and Rants
These came as a result of Ringo doing research on other forums and thinking about what could be improved on ours to give a better experience for everyone. I hope you enjoy them! David, I'm looking forward to reading your Brag / Rant!
