What kinds of information and technology is used in Supply Chain communication?
Written by:

Article Overview: Network Member Question:
What kinds of information is being sent across companies in a Supply Chain? And what technology is helping you with that? I have been reading more about SCM lately, and I was wondering what kinds of information is being sent across companies? Is it all numbers and values ? Or unstructured data as well ?
And how is technology helping you to do this ? Do you share a specific platform across these companies? Or does every company has its own, and is this connected to one another ? Which software enables you to do so ?

What kinds of information and technology is used in Supply Chain communication?
My Answer:
With the emergence of the Metaprise (and Web 2.0) platforms the term supply "chain" is actually a misnomer.
In reality, supply "synchronization" amongst key transactional stakeholders has become a reality, in that the exchange of real-time, real-world data extends beyond the confines of the "loose coupling" associated with the Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) that are being heralded as the next phase of the connectivity evolution.
Specifically, the real-time availability of critical data empowers optimal front line decision-making in accordance with centrally established guidelines by seamlessly adapting to the real-world processes that define an organizations supply chain practices.
Based upon an agent-based model, the Metaprise platform leverages advanced algorithms to both capture and apply dynamic data to streamline all phases of a transaction from procurement through to shipping to administrative reconciliation.
I have included links (see below) to a number of the articles I have written on this subject.
Please note that the Government of Canada's Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program has funded a significant portion of my research efforts.

- I just finished re-reading Richard Worzel's 'The Next 20 Years of Your Life." Originally published in 1997 (and purchased) I found it incredible to re-read this piece and see how dead on this man is as a futurist. Now, not all of his predictions came true but there is a ton of information around the ideas of a online social network and a world where anyone with a video camera can become a producer. Sound like facebook and youtube?
One of the really interesting things I found was that Mr. Worzel has an amazing ability to articulate human behaviour in trends and through analysis. I especially found his comment, 'when women truly become the worlds next leaders, the development of technology for the sake of technology will stop.'
Hmm....I doubt that.
Does anyone have a favourite futurist they like to watch and listen too?

An "Easy Button"
- In the US, Staples Office Supply company has a commercial that features an easy button. The idea is that when you have a difficult task, you hit the easy button and the task is easier. Staples is saying that they make it easier. But, my question is, what would you use an "easy button" for??
