It is interesting that you refer to both Wal-Mart and Dell.
In July I wrote an article titled Public Sector Procurement and the Wal-Mart Effect (see link below). The basis for the post was to provide insight into government organizations that had the inclination to emulate the Wal-Mart "model."
As you read the results of several studies the question of whether the Wal-Mart approach is sustainable may give you pause for thought in terms of the term "poster child."
Conversely, my research of the emerging Cisco model which was reviewed in a December 3, 2007 article, (Is Cisco Really Driving 21st Centurty Supply Chain Innovation?) demonstrates the paradigm shift that is taking place in supply chain practice.
In fact this shift was further illustrated by the April 11, 2008 post Is Ford's auto-xchange the Real Deal?
Whether Cisco or Ford can achieve the lofty objectives associated with their aggressive strategies, this is nonetheless an indication of the dynamic changes that are re-shaping supply chain practice over the next 25 years and beyond.
Note: On May 1, 2008 my latest white papers, The Ariba Interviews: Re-engineering the Future of On-Demand, and Dangerous Supply Chain Myths will be released.
