Turning around the stress in your business - telling yourself the truth
There is always a question whether the stress you experience is real or just something you create by allowing it to 'take you down.'I'll share the first of my five-part formula for how to take back control. It takes a bit of work, but if done properly, you can manage your mindset and stay on top of the stressful elements in your business because managing your energy is your #1 job! Here are the first two ideas for you to begin working with.
Come Clean - Be honest. You can't do anything about a problem if you don't acknowledge it. So what does stress mean to you? How does it look? And what are your unique ways of doing it?
These are some common symptoms that I see -
- Overwhelm because you don't know what to do next
- Lack of sleep because your mind is going over and over and over.....
- Self doubt which causes you to under charge
- Loss of productivity (cuz you are just doing mindless busy work all day)
- A dip in revenue because marketing stops or slows down
- Immobilization because at this point, shutting down feels like a good solution
The way out of this is truthfully some good old self-reflection. An exercise which would be helpful would be to notice when you are at your peak what you experience. How do you show up? What do you do? What thoughts are in your mind that feel supportive? Now do the opposite. When you break down or get stressed/overwhelmed, what's going on? The problem most of us have is that we are such little worker-bees that we don't notice that we are getting fried! Taking the time to map out your 'stress cycle' will give you the heads up when you are sliding back there.
Stop the Spinning - Good for you. You have acknowledged that you may be a bit stressed. And now it's time to get off the merry-go-round for a bit. In this phase you will consciously notice that you have slipped into stress and now make conscious decisions to do something different. Notice a lot of emphasis on the word CONSCIOUS because for most of us, getting out of our zone and on the stress-train is usually unconscious. No one chose that destination, but suddenly we wake up one day and its like, "Holy Cow....how did I get here? The big red sign that says "STOP" is just what you need to do right now.
Set your Course - Phase three is where you now look at what you are aiming toward. There is a fine dance between the details of today and the dreams of tomorrow. If you are too mired in the details, you'll be overwhelmed with all there is and how to crank it all out. Being too caught up into the big dream for your future will have you not knowing what you are working on next to move you forward. Here's what you do - Pick a relatively short term goal like 3 to 6 months out. Then you will list all the tasks that need to happen in order to get that done. After you list all the tasks via a big brain dump, you will calendar it.
What happens most often when folks are stressed is that they don't know what to work on next and they have VERY unrealistic time frames set up. This method will allow you to not only stay focused on the bigger picture goal, but will also solve the "what to do tomorrow" challenge as well. And one more thing....make sure you have a visual reminder of that big goal. It's easy to get lost and stressed about the minutia, so having the tangible thing to focus on can keep you in the
game a bit more.
In the next post I'll cover a the last two steps designed to get you turned around and get a handle on the stress in your biz. And in the meantime, focus on the good!
Blessings,
Therese

Re: Who/what inspired you?
- I always wanted my own business, without someone telling me what to do, but never took the step, because I didn't know which business to own. A friend kept pushing me and telling me that owning my own biz will be the answer to a free spirit like me. After a lot of pushing I started searching and learning, but the costs were too high.
Then came the online business opportunity, again offered to me by another friend, and he introduced me to internet marketing and the rest is history.
The main thing for me was the ability to run a business without selling it directly to people (no phone calls, not standing and pushing products).
Re: Building an Advisory Board - Steps 5 & 6
- [quote="TheRainmaker":2iirlscv]6) Ask for Honesty.
while honesty to me, should not be something you have to ask for, in some cases it pays to be really really clear about what honesty means to you and to the others in your group.
you have to allow everyone to express their thoughts and ideas, openly and frankly. this is no time to take things you dont like personally.
I like to ask my board members what their mistakes on a certain topic were. It helps me learn from them and not have to face it the hard way on my own.
If you foster open communication and honest feedback, focussing on problem solving and resolutions (not defending the mistake etc.) you will get further ahead than you even dream possible. Remove the EGO's from the room if you can.
And always remember, the board came together because they believe in you, your business and your integrity. Capitalize on it![/quote:2iirlscv]
Hi Jude,
How do you interpret "honesty"? By that I mean, let's say you ask your advisory board if they like or dislike your new product and someone says "yes, I like it". While that person maybe telling you the truth...how do you go about deciphering the true meaning behind the comments made in an orderly fashion? Saying "I like it" could mean multiple things like:
a) That advisory board member personally likes the product and would buy it, and thinks your target market will love it too.
b) That advisory board member personally dislikes the product and would not buy it, but thinks your target market will love it though.
c) That advisory board member personally likes the product, but not enough to buy it, yet he/she thinks your target market will love it though.
etc.
There's no time to ask each advisory board member more probabing questions to get out the complete "truth". So what do you recommend?

Boosting Confidence
- Wow! There has been so much response, it's hard to know where to start responding... I goes to show that confidence is a hot topic!
If you’ve ever heard of “Executive’s Disease”, you’ve heard that even the most successful people in business have moments where they feel stressed over something that needs to be done. It sounds so much nicer to call it stress, but stress is strongly linked to FEAR on some level or another. [u:16vd1x1j]We’re all human after all. [/u:16vd1x1j] (Perhaps this is why executives have much higher rates of heart disease. They appear to be 100% confident to everyone else, but they still feel it on some level inside.)
Jude, thanks for sharing your journey to great confidence. I can relate to your dog story, by the way. I’m the person my neighbors and friends call when they have a pet problem. When I was working with the Pet Rescue Group, someone called me the Cat Whisperer! :0)
I also believe that confidence is tied to self worth and competence. Boosting our self esteem and gaining confidence through experience really does help.
The question is, what does a person do to boost her confidence when she comes up against those times where she’s facing big issues that are new to her? For example, if you were going to be on Oprah with millions of people watching you for the very first time, what would you tell yourself to chase away the butterflies that might set in?
In a perfect world, we would all be walking around stress free and not have any doubts or fears. However, life is full of challenges, especially as entrepreneurs forging new paths. The key is in finding ways to really boost our courage to forge on when the going gets tricky and unfamiliar.
Yes, I believe when we have a strong purpose behind what we do, it gives us confidence to move forward in spite of any misgivings or naysayers. When we add passion to that purpose, we seem unstoppable!
It also boosts our confidence to surround ourselves with people who support us in our journey. Of course, we believe we can create a great life and business. They just give us the added benefit when they cheer us on. We are social creatures, after all. I can do well on my own, but I have a coach and am part of a mentor group because I find I accomplish even more with a strong support system. (Coaching isn’t about weakness, it’s about doing everything I can to reach my potential in the best possible way.)
Support systems certainly help to keep the scales balanced when we find ourselves around people who don’t understand our vision. We need to lay down very strong boundaries for the people who are not supportive. That’s a whole other discussion. One of our weapons is keeping ourselves convinced of our plan and our purpose, even if someone else is threatened by our success (or plans for success).
Sometimes, we can be tempted to make ourselves small around those we love so that it doesn’t cause discord. When we do that, we jeopardize our own integrity and undermine our confidence. This is your life to live and your business to run. It is you who must hold the reigns and you who must succeed at your own life. Let them succeed at their own life.
Having said this, I think we must at least examine what they challenge us with to see if there is any truth in what they are saying. The key is in finding out the truth [u:16vd1x1j]before you let it in[/u:16vd1x1j]. Otherwise, something that is simply not true (and may be THEIR issue) could throw you off track. If it is true, you can make the necessary changes and perhaps avoid some huge pitfalls down the road.
Beat mentioned the books, Approval Addiction and Battlefield of the Mind. I’ve read quite a bit of them and it’s little wonder they are best sellers because of their subject matter. I’ve heard many people comment on the titles themselves.
There’s the old saying, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t.” There’s even a scripture verse on it for those of you who’ve brought that aspect into this thread: “Everything is possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) No wonder true success comes from the inside out.
OK, it’s time to stop. I feel like I’ve written a book here!
Warm regards,
Tami
AWeber as Autoresponder
- I've been using AWeber as my autoresponder program for over a year. I researched a lot of companies and AWeber at that time had the highest delivery rate in the business. They are considered a very reputable company by many email hosting companies. They also offer the subscriber double opt in option to protect you from spam complaints.
They deliver emails very quickly when someone signs up. You actually get to check the time the person signed up and when it arrived in their email box.
I've rarely had undeliverable emails with AWeber. It could be because I check all of my work on their spam filter guide before I send it out. It's obviously a great filter.
Their customer service has been great. I have to admit I've had a few issues with my ezine when I've imported information from Word, but they seem to have that problem ironed out now.
I must say it really is important to be sure on who you want to go with. I had some serious glitches with my previous autoresponder company. It seemed they were losing email addresses from my account. I had several people I know telling me they had signed up to receive my ezine (newsletter) and there was absolutely no record of them on the autoresponders behalf. My web traffic stats proved people had even gotten to the thank you for signing up page. The people who were dropped could tell me what I had written so they were definitely telling me the truth. Hence my diligent search for a new company began in early 2007!
I personally wouldn't think of going to a different autoresponder now, knowing that it is really important to me that my subscribers actually get my information. I don't want to end up in some one's spam filter!
My current web hosting company offers its own autoresponder as part of my package, but I simply won't take the risk of going with an unproven system. I'd rather pay the $20 a month to AWeber.
Hopefully, this helps.
Best wishes in your search,
Tami
