Why I Love to Mastermind

When I first joined a mastermind, I hardly even knew what it was. I just had that knowing that joining the program was the inspired action I needed to take to catapult my business to the next level. And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know that it did that and more! Napoleon Hill coined the term “mastermind” to describe the powerful collective brain that forms when a group of like-minded people come together for the betterment of all members.

When you add to the mix a significant investment, miracles happen. The first year I was in a very high-level mastermind group, my income shot from $130,000 to $2.2 million!

Just making the significant investment lit a fire under me that I didn't even know existed and had me think in ways I never had before.

I was also surprised to find that investing in myself at that level helped me to know the benefit I would be providing to others by offering my own services at that level, and it gave me the courage to offer high-level mastermind programs as well.

I really believe that you can’t expect someone to invest in themselves through you at a level greater than you've invested in yourself. You just can't know what you’re asking of them if you haven't done it yourself.

Here are a few other reasons why I love to mastermind:

1. You get support for your quantum leaps.

Imagine that group of highly invested professionals all focused on helping you get where you want to go -- or, even better, where you hardly dare to dream of going. That’s what happens, and, with that support, you can make some really profound leaps. I’ve seen people who have struggled alone for months or years birth six- and seven-figure ideas after only eight minutes of mastermind focus!

Then there’s Sonja Miller, whose story always inspires me. During the year that she was a member of my Sales, Authenticity & Success Mastermind (aka: Sassy Mastermind), at a time when it felt as though her personal life was falling apart, when most people in her position would just curl up in the fetal position on the couch and do nothing, her income leapt from $40,000 to more than six figures! And not only that, but her book became a bestseller and went international. At my last event she generously shared that because of the work she did while in the mastermind, she felt that she had created “job security as an entrepreneur.” Again, very inspiring!

2. Tools and resources.

When you’re in a mastermind, you don’t have to spend a lot of time looking for people to help you with your vision. When you want to hire a team, you just ask your mastermind members, “Who’s doing your copy?” And you get five recommendations. “Who does your graphics?” “Hey, will you look at my talk title?” “Help me choose the cover for my book.” You’re never alone, and you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

3. Accountability.

When you’re a solopreneur, you’re sitting at home behind your computer and there’s no accountability. You have to build that in. There has to be somebody knowing what you promised to do and whether you did it, because it’s just too easy for your other responsibilities to take you away from the work that’s really critical to your mission. That’s why I always surround myself with a group of like-minded people…to build in structured accountability.

BNI Groups - do they work? BNI Groups - do they work? - Hi Lesley, From the members in my Mastermind Group I've heard a number of positive and negative things about BNI Groups. Just like a Mastermind Group, it all depends on who the people are. If the personalities fit and the members can add value to your business it can be worth checking out. The best bet is to go to a meeting as a guest to get a sense of who is in the group and if it is for you. It doesn't cost you anything except a little extra sleep the morning of. Good luck!
