Web Presence
Web presence
You
just read about branding and how to set yourself apart in the marketplace.
Today’s business world is an internet world. If you’re not on the web your business
might as well be dead. Ok probably not that drastic but it sounded catchy.
Having a website and an internet presence is so much easier and less expensive
than it was even a few years ago. To not invest a couple thousand dollars into
having a website that is at least informative for people to check out is silly.
You could leave a lot of money on the table that way. People like to kick tires
before they buy and going to your website anonymously is a good way to do that.
Even having a basic one page website that gives a brief overview of who you are
and what your company does is better than nothing. Today setting up a simple Wordpress
website is fairly simple. If you aren’t at all savvy with online, web type
thingys (don’t you love my technical jargon) it can be outsourced very
inexpensively. Matt Sartori, owner of Wired Ground, a web development firm in Indianapolis, says “Visitors
to your site should immediately understand what you do, what you're selling,
and understand how to start the buying process. Minimally creating a site with
a home page giving a snapshot of what your company does and a page with your
services can convey to a potential customer needs to make an informed decision.”
It is also good to have a blog and some educational type content but if you’re
not comfortable with that it’s ok to start slow. Adding a few tools such as a
contact form, or integrating social media elements such as twitter or a
facebook fan page can be useful since once they are up there you don’t have to
touch them. As people go to your site they can click on the links and become
more familiar with who you are and what your company does.
On
first glance when most of us look at a web site we see the pretty pictures. I
know when I am looking for a certain product or service on the internet I will
Google them item and then open up a few sites to see which one “looks” the
best. The “look” mainly comes from the designer of your logo, your brand as
Josh earlier discussed. This is hugely important because it’s that first
impression. However I can’t tell you how many times I have found the
“prettiest” picture and then tried to find information just to be completely
frustrated by the horrible functionality of the site. When there are so many
choices these days a pretty picture isn’t enough.
Your
website should at minimum do five things:
·
Be
visually appealing.
·
Be
a silent salesman for your goods or services.
·
Educate
your customer on your products or services.
·
Be
easy to navigate for the person on it trying to find things.
·
Be
integrated in social media.
While
having a website is important you want to do it right or it could be worse than
not having one at all. Make sure to have your brand and logo integrated in to
your website so you have consistency in your appearance.
The
great thing about the internet is you never know who might stumble across your
website. It might give you that big customer.
