Live Consultant Thinking: Looking at A Business Coach in the Corporate Strategy
|
| Guest post by: Dan McDevitt |
Article Overview: In most sports, certainly in most sports businesses, the line-up is similar. You have the owners, the general manager, other managers, the head coach, coaching staff, trainers, scouts and recruiters, ticket sellers, and hopefully a roster of all-star players. This alignment of tasks and talents works well most of the time. With so many great sports business models to learn from, you wonder why we are slow to acknowledge the important role of coach in general business.

Live Consultant Thinking: Looking at A Business Coach in the Corporate Strategy
Put me in, coach, I'm ready to play. We are either on the playing field or sitting on the bench.
In most sports, certainly in most sports businesses, the line-up is similar. You have the owners, the general manager, other managers, the head coach, coaching staff, trainers, scouts and recruiters, ticket sellers, and hopefully a roster of all-star players. This alignment of tasks and talents works well most of the time.
In non-sports businesses, which makes up the vast reality of the real world we toil in each day, we have many different understandings of our teamneeds. Ownershipand management is usually defined, at least well enough, where we know who's who and where to find them. Depending on the size and nature of the business, the human resources department duties of finding and securing talent may, or may not, be understood and taken seriously. Too often, human resource personnel have to serve more as referees and less as scouts and recruiters.
Most marketing and sales effortsare deemed onlyas necessary, barely, and the talent that is present often responds accordingly. Training is talked about as a good idea, and because it's effectiveness is hard to measure it usually is not.
With so many great sports business models to learn from, you wonder why we are slow to acknowledge the important role of coach in general business.
Some of us need to get out more often. You never know what you might learn at the business across the street, or at the ballpark or down where the lilies grow.
Rudyard Kipling "met a little elf man one day down where the lilies grow. He asked him why he was so small, for they are small you know. He looked at me and with his eyes, he saw me through and through. I am no more small for me, said he, than you are big for you."
By comparison, you are only as different from me, said me, as I am different from you. You are not going to change me. It is not your job. Agood coach will tell you thatyour job in business is to resolve any conflicts, get past the roadblocks and drive your agenda forward. That is the job to be done in business. Coaches know the game, know the playing field, and help guide the talent to success.
Win-win is not the goal. Proceeding with the company business remains the goal. Serving customers, making a profit, keeping people employed, is what needs to be done.
Coacheskeeps business on track, and coach serious business professionals. Business management is the job. Relationship management is one of many things to do.
Happy is nice. The coach knows that happy all the time is a high expectation. Good luck with it.
