Live Consultant Thinking: Some Essence of Managerial Skills

Guest post by: Dan McDevitt

Article Overview: As a business intermediary and consultant, I help with speaking engagements, writing and presenting on business topics. Most people I work with agree that speaking is easier than listening. We struggle with listening. We hear without much effort, but it is the listening part that we need to work on. Both listening and observing are managerial skills that come in handy at work, and at home.

Live Consultant Thinking: Some Essence of Managerial Skills

I can hear you, loud and clear, just not listening.

My hearing loss may be selective. When Geri says dinner is ready, the sound of her voicefloats through the air like a beautiful melody. Later, she is saying something about cleaning the garage, and I'm just not getting it. The sound is distorted, like feedback on a cheap amp.

As a business intermediary and consultant, I help with speaking engagements, writing and presenting on business topics. Most people I work with agree that speaking is easier than listening. We struggle with listening. We hear without much effort, but it is the listening part that we need to work on. Both listening and observing are managerial skills that come in handy at work, and at home.

We enjoy vibrant differences in personality as we receive and breakdown data. I hear what you say, at some point I have to think about it. Good use of personality- type knowledge will help us boost the message through others reception filters. The truth is that we do judge a book by its cover. We view the exterior as we consider the content inside.

Appearance & impression matters to us. Socially or physically or mentally attractive people get perceived as better, smarter, more valuable. There is no need for us to debate if this is fair or not fair. It is not fair, but understand it is reality. We do it. Let's do it right.

Think about this. People, as in customers, guests, clients, as in people, favor people like them. That is how we are. You and I like people who are like us. We have to see something in someone else that provokes us to want to know more about the person. As we get to know more, we are comfortable or uncomfortable and proceed accordingly.

Birds of a feather flock together for a reason. They know about each other, have comfort and trust with each other. This is known as resemblance with us humans. These birds hear each other, and actually listen to each other.

Today's valuable business tip: Listen up! Listen to what is being said, and listen for what is not being said.

Re: what position to request? Re: what position to request? - Hi Michael, Great suggestion from David, or you could try something around a design consultancy, How about Website Design Consultant, Design and Development Manager, Website Support and Development Manager or maybe Internet Business Development Consultant. Ultimately whatever you are comfortable with and good luck for the future, Mal.
How Quick is That How Quick is That - Just to let you know that as I'm not as sharp as I might be in the ftp sort of world, I had a problem today with uploading a new site. Hostgator 'Live Chat' fixed this for me in two minutes flat and didn't make me feel I was an idiot at all (at least anymore than I felt myself). As I'm in the UK and ringing early am for me here, I thought that 'Live Chat' might have been EST, so off for me, but no, they were there! BTW I'd spelt my nameservers slightly wrong - duh! Now that's what I call service. Regards.

Re: Today's Hottest Franchise? Re: Today's Hottest Franchise? - I try to keep up on some of the hot franchises, I have noticed an increase in interest in the service industries. Lower cost, lower overhead etc... I think this is because most folks have less to invest or less they are willing to risk. John Henning Franchise Consultant
Re: HI, Peter from enRoute ads. Inc Re: HI, Peter from enRoute ads. Inc - I focused on accounting and did my electives in marketing. I looked outside the University for finance courses as i was not as interested int he personal financial planning aspect. Now I am juggling the idea of doing my Certified General Accountant designation or my Certified Managerial Accountant designation. Not sure yet, I want the designation to be in line with what I want to do, which ultimately is to start businesses for the rest of my life. I think a solid accounting foundation is huge, and the managerial accounting side of things really helps you achieve scalability. - Pete
