The Heroes Direct Their Business

Guest post by: Dan McDevitt

Article Overview: To direct, direct yourself. Think about what motivates you. Is it much different from what motivates those you need to direct? Employees who are properly stimulated, who are motivated, poked and provoked to surpass their job performance expectations will help you reach the company goals. They teach you things of value along the way. "Here is how you do it" is learned day by day as you do it.

The Heroes Direct Their Business

Direct your business, give your business direction, to reach success. Management has a plan. You have the cast of players in place and know the script. It is show time. If you choose to be in command, you must command. To command is to direct your epic productions.

As business managers, we have the business plan, and we have organized the business. We are at step three already. The third function of management is to direct. The task degree of difficulty has risen.

To direct is to supervise and control action. To direct, supervise, control other people's actions effectively is a work of art. No matter how practiced or achieved we may be in directing, we do not get it right every time. We can only get it right if we want to get it right. We have to try.

Even with our knowledge and the many excellent books and training programs on communication and relationships, we will still direct with difficulty. Failure to direct is failure et al. Do not want to miss the measure here.

I want to treat this point with the respect it deserves. Creating and communicating, nurturing a positive interpersonal relationships environment will amplify your problem solving ability and company productivity off the chart. Please be aware that this will not occur on day one. Study, and learn, learn to understand. Areas that need improvement is usually a moving target.

Ask questions and be prepared for honest answers. Take responsibility for all mistakes. You know all mistakes are yours. You are the manager.

We are competitive and self-preserving. This stuff about truth and understanding does not come naturally to us. It can be discomforting. You and I have to work at it. As we work at it, we awake and get over ourselves. You are a hero. You need an improved you, an improved hero every day.

Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time - Thanks David - both are great suggestions! We've done Elon Musk from PayPal but none of the traditional credit card companies - I like the VISA idea a lot! Right now we're working through the entrepreneurs who were part of our Entrepreneur Heroes trading cards and as soon as that's done I'll add this to the list!
