The Heroes Plan Their Business

Guest post by: Dan McDevitt

Article Overview: We have all heard the directive to plan our work and work our plan. That is pretty much it. Enough work for now, let us go get some lunch. After lunch, we can put together a list of actions needed to reach the business goals.

The Heroes Plan Their Business

The Plan is the foundation for business success.

Planning is the alpha function of management. The Plan is the foundation.

Planning is your specific 'in the beginning' statement. Your plan is the base you build management on. While The Plan is bedrock, the ongoing fluid activity of planning, is the river that runs through it.

The business plan should express what the company is, where the company is at the moment, and where you want the company to be at some point. Your degree of formality is your choice. Something beyond your initial scribble of goals and objectives on the back of an envelope. Flesh out the business plan with thoughtful detail. List the required course of action needed to reach your business goals.

You may have noticed the world does not sit still. A kaleidoscope of modern world external factors will influence your plan. After all, it is merely your plan, not the world's plan. Conditions in the business world will be positive and negative. Try to have some good lemonade recipes in your back pocket.

Writing your business plan is serious. It does not have to be drudgery. Say what you want and what you plan to do. The business plan states the objectives. 'We plan to provide our product, our service, of value to the marketplace, in sufficient volume to reward all stakeholders in abundance.' That is a business plan. It is your plan. You do need to add some tender loving details for it to work for you.

We share some common traits. We do not always think alike. That is a good thing. We do not make progress when we all think alike. Enjoy that everyone's approach is different.

Harry Nilsson had a plan. He explained it this way. "You put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better. You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up. Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning." That may have worked for Harry. You have to decide ona plan that works for you.

Planning is the alpha function of management. The business plan should express what the company is, and then list the required course of action needed to reach your business goals.

Business Innovation Business Innovation - Hi Simon If you can finish off the Business Plan and think about your strategic direction or how you are going to use your product to convince people it's a great idea, it will set the foundation for your programming project. You see, when you are looking for funding you will need a Business Plan and Strategic Plan that will convince companies to invest into your new idea. Has anyone achieved this idea before using another industry besides health and fitness that you know of? You should also design some mockups as a "preview" for your programming project. This will also help reduce your programming costs as everyone will know exactly what you want if you have detailed mockups already completed including any functionality you require. Starting mockups for websites and software applications on paper is the best way if you're not a guru in graphic editing software.
Re: NEW VIDEO - How to improve your business plan - Ask Evan Re: NEW VIDEO - How to improve your business plan - Ask Evan - Thanks Evan, great intro into how the VC's see business plan. I will take a look, but hope that this video as number 1 in a series. It is unfortunate that these types of errors, the most basic of errors as you point out here are common to too many business plans, having reviewed a few hundred myself from both a development and funding perspective. As a mentor and workshop facilitator for Business Plan development for a number of start-up IT and multimedia companies, your presentation help support and show how the VC's see and evaluate a plan Shameful, that too many don't take the time to learn how to properly prepare, present and defend their plans. Over the years, I have enjoyed Business Plan competitions, and help re-work some of the winning proposals
