Once you have your strategy and you have tested it, you need to launch it. In most cases, because of the size and scope of the issues that a small or medium sized company faces, a small meeting will normally suffice.
This kickoff event is the bridging point between strategy formulation and taking action.
All key players are gathered in one place to:
· Review and sharpen the strategy and ensure a common understanding of the issues.
· Set key milestone dates.
· Define the measures of success and failure.
· Create specific assignments and work plans.
· Get people to commit to their individual tasks.
· Define the follow up process.
· Allocate resources.
· Set dates for progress reviews.
Many clients I have implemented this process for have questioned the need for a kick off event, asking "Why do I need to do this". Well, it takes a special effort to get peoples attention and to prepare to do something new. A well run kickoff event signals a change ...real change... and that is an essential ingredient of effective execution.
The kick off event will generate energy and commitment from all your staff to coordinated action to achieve success. In the meeting you want intense dialogue and maybe even some arguments among the key staff members, this is good thing as it flushes out assumptions, clarifies understanding of what's to be done and builds mutual understanding of each others roles in the process.
When you are running the kickoff meeting, remember these three important issues and know how to handle them:
· Would you be able to keep the meeting on message, on track and on schedule?
· How would you cope when people reach a dead end or get into conflict?
· Would you be sure to hear from everyone?
Whatever you do to launch your project, think in through in advance.
