Davao - Way Ahead to Be the Next BPO Hub

This article highlights on the current development measures taking place in the It/BPO sector of Davao. This city of Philippines after being ranked among the "next wave" cities has been on the quest to become the next potential BPO hub in the country.

After being ranked as the "next wave" city, Davao currently seeks to hold its position as the next potential BPO destination in Philippines. The information and communication technology sector of the city is focused on four key areas. They are building up of a sustainable talent pool, enhancing overall business environment, working on present infrastructure and reducing cost to carry forward business services. All of these steps are taken to give Davao the edge as the next preferred location for the business process outsourcing (BPO) firms.

In a survey conducted last April 15, Davao topped the list of the "next wave" cities. This survey was conducted by some of the leading organizations- Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPA/P), the Department of Trade and Industry and the Commission on Information and Communication Technology. As per the survey, Davao was chosen as an up-coming location best-prepared to house the needs of the BPO companies, those seeking for alternative sites other than Metro Cebu and Manila.

Development initiatives taking place currently indicates strong focus of this Philippine city to reach out its aim of becoming the next potential BPO hub. Lizabel G. Holganza, the President of the Information and Communication Technology Association of Davao Inc. citing her views in an email indicated that all measures taken stand crucial in all every respect.

Ms. Holganza added that the information and communication technology sector is engaged in bringing the entire development programs to the very next level. Giving her views on the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, she went to say that their present plan stresses on including some of the most higher-value tasks. These include some modern services like animation, software development and medical transcription as well.

According to Ms. Holganza, the city plans to move further with a range of other innovative services in the coming years. Now these include moving beyond the basic call center services. With this, the city plans to imbibe a lot of active measures that will help to attract business process outsourcing firms to make Davao the best pick.

In her e-mail, Ms. Holganza also reflected on the continuing power problem, hounding the whole country. The worst hit area is Mindanao. That requires being resolved as promptly as possible. She said that there is a need to find out some long-term answers on the prevailing energy challenge- as it poses threat to the growth prospects.

In Ms. Holganza's opinion, the new recognition of Davao as one of the prospective locations for BPO firms outside Metro Cebu and Metro Manila also corrects several perceptions. There were some perceptions regarding the chaos prevailing in some parts of the Mindanao. However, the situation is not all the same. So the investors need to come in the city to check out on their own what potential is in stored in the city.

In terms of human power and other resources, the Davao-based business process outsourcing firms are currently engaged in hiring huge number of localities. Mr. Andre Joseph T.

Fournier who is the industry consultant of Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that the situation has undergone a change. Now applicants within the city do not seek alternative employment options in Metro Cebu or Metro Manila. Instead, applicants find Davao based BPO firms as the career choice.

Re: Who inspired you to start? Re: Who inspired you to start? - Hi Evan, I was inspired by Mr. Bill Gates ever since I was a student learning Computers. But I was motivated for Internet as my Business, when I read his book "The Road Ahead" in 1995. It was in this book that Gates laid out his vision of an interconnected world built around the Internet. Based on the premise that life will be transformed by the convergence of inexpensive computing and inexpensive communications, Gates drew from his experience at the center of the personal computer revolution to give insights on the growth, evolution and impact of technology. I had always looked up to Bill Gates as my idol. When I read this book, it made me more focussed on Microsoft and Internet, The Internet was one of the upcoming things in this time. So I took over to the Internet as my primary business. Regards,
