Six sigma methodology and techniques are required to be aligned with Business objectives to bring the best business result for a commercial organization. But, in most of the cases, Six sigma expertsand Business objectives are not aligned 100% to demonstrate the best business result even though the organization has been married to Six sigma methodology and techniques. Let us find out the root causes of the non alignment.

Six sigma is a data driven approach to remove defect in any process/product/service. The defect rate must not exceed 3.4 defects/million opportunities. While we may have six sigma black belts or master black belts in an organization, we may have well defined business processes also for a business. Even then, there could be a probability for a Business failure. Why is it so?. Though the six sigma black belt or master black belt may have enough knowledge on methodology or tools or techniques etc., they may not have enough exposure or hands-on experience on the functional/domain knowledge of the Business. Six sigma is for Business success, not for failure. When a six sigma green belt or black belt or master black belt without having working experience or functional/ domain of the business tries to optimize the performance of the business process which is having more pain areas, may meet the failure. Otherwise, the business organization may not yield required business result out of these efforts. For a successful six sigma adaptation or implementation in business, one of the important tools is process mapping. Process mapping would help the organization to find out non-value added activities in the business process which is having more pains or problems or customer complaints. Removal of non value added activities are indispensable as each activity is associated with resources, time and cost and to optimize the efficiency of the process. To do a successful process mapping, one needs to have through understanding of the system and functional knowledge of the business process. In most of the process mapping cases, no proper synchronization or coordination or understanding or acceptance between the business users and six sigma experts. One of the objectives for the business organization at the time of six sigma implementation is reducing the cycle time of a business process.

Therefore, it is necessary, the six sigma green belt or black belt or master black belt certified resource must have the working knowledge of the particular function/domain. It could be automobile or software development or logistics etc. As they are playing vital role as change managers, they need to equip themselves with functional/domain knowledge. The next important step would be to ensure that the hard work in the form of new business process or corrective measures for the best business result put forward by the six sigma experts must reach the top to bottom of the organization. All employees of all levels are required to practice the six sigma culture or new processes without fail as per the direction of six sigma black or master black belts for the best result and desired business growth. They need to sustain it.

As six sigma methodology - DEMAIC, tools, techniques etc. are very important to reduce the variation, reduces the cycle time and defects in a business process on the way to delight the customers and increase the net profit of the business organization which is determined to go for six sigma culture and business initiative, needs to ensure they have resources with six sigma practical knowledge and functional/domain knowledge of the business for a desirable business result.

Broken delivery guarantees Broken delivery guarantees - Hi Everyone, I recently had a bad online purchasing experience due delivery problems. A tennis retailer I ordered from had used FedEx's Standard Overnight shipping to try and deliver my package to my friend's place in NY on Friday, August 29th. However, since my friend was at work and the condo doorman was perhaps on a break, FedEx brought it back to their depot. Keep in mind that I was only in NY for the long weekend, so I wouldn't even be able to get my order when they try to make a 2nd delivery attempt. So what's the point of calling it "Overnight delivery" when I didn't end up getting my package the next day? Most residential addresses won't have anyone at home to accept parcels because everyone is at work, so why even bother trying to deliver something during the day if you can't leave it there? And get this, FedEx then tries to deliver the goods again on Tues, Sept 2nd but reports it's the "incorrect address" and there's no such place. But then how come they found condo on Aug 29th? My order was just shipping in their depot on Sept 3rd and according to their online tracking, it's supposed to be delivered sometime today on Sept 4th. We'll see. FedEx's Overnight shipping has turned into 3+ days shipping. What would you do? I was so infuriated that I wanted to just cancel the order and ask FedEx to return it back to the retailer. I've never had any of these sort of problems with UPS.
