FCC Formally Proposes National Broadband Plan
If you are a fan of VoIP you
will be glad to hear you aren’t alone.
The FCC has formally submitted a proposal to congress urging them to
switch the nation to a broadband network for phone lines.
Quoting Maximum PC the National Broadband Plan, “sets out a goal for at least 100 million U.S.
homes to have affordable access to at least 100Mbps downstream and 50Mbps
upstream speeds within the next decade.”
Although the plan goes into
much detail it also aims to close the gap between those of us already using
broadband and those of us who don’t.
“About 100 million Americans don't have access at all, and about 14
million of those simply have no choice, the FCC said.
By 2020, the agency hopes to have 90 percent of homes using broadband and to
ensure that all children are "digitally literate" before they
graduate from high school.”
If this plan passes it could
be really beneficial to business owners.
Many already know the benefits to VoIP because of the low long distance
rates. Office phone systems could
really benefit from this plan. If
you have more than one office you can transfer calls from office to office if
you implement a VoIP system—even if they are on opposite coasts.
This move by the FCC really
isn’t too shocking though. With
Skype, Vonage and other VoIP phones in the mix, it really seemed
inevitable. Digital cable made the
change this past year for the same reason. Technology is evolving so much people are not using more
traditional means for phones, Internet or even TV.
Residential VoIP services
are also becoming more popular as well as apps for smartphones. Even iPod Touch users, can now download
a new app that lets you use VoIP technology to make phone calls. The app was
created by Toktumi and is called the Line2 VoIP app.
We will all have to wait and
see how Congress decides, but for now it seems broadband is making its mark not
just for computers anymore, but for phone systems as well.
