Handheld Commercials coming via App Ads
The brilliant thing about the iPhone, besides the
revolutionary multi-touch capability and the endless application development
options, is the fact that Apple managed to sell ad time to a device that people
were lining up to get their hands on before they ever saw one in person.
Steve Job’s online marketing team managed to perfect a
system where they can sell high-priced cell phones to consumers, as well as to
businesses looking to promote their products. Instead of the phone’s
themselves, however, web designers are now focusing on ad space for the mobile
web.
What is exceedingly effective about Apple’s iPhone ads
though, is the fact that these advertising campaigns, while not completely foregoing
traditional methods like telemarketing services or online commercials, can
direct their attention to their exact target market.
In the same vein as Facebook’s personalized ads that target
users through age, location, and gender, the iPhone’s ads have been able to
target consumers through previous app downloads and even by geography through location aware ads.
Essentially, the iPhone’s are now handheld POS systems for
customers, where they can purchase directly from Apple and its partners. While
movements to improve advertising on cell phones has ranged from automated text
messaging deals to clickable ads on the bottom of application displays, none of
these ads have come close to essentially branding mobile web space.
Now, not only can companies come out with their own
applications for iPhone users, such as Geico Insurance'sfree
app, they can basically allow users to indirectly download links to their
services and products. Advertising via related products is not new, and neither
is free downloads that are accompanied by marketing promotions, but focusing
entire campaigns towards one device are.
Essentially, Geico’s app uses its televised advertisements as
a ploy for users to download their iPhone accompaniment, which in turn is an
interactive commercial. The app allows users to make payments, as well as view
Geico’s video uploads – which are essentially ads as well.
Having location awareness built into mobile devices is
essentially a way for advertisers to utilize GPS capabilities on the consumer
market. The brilliance of Apple’s app-involved advertising is in its ability to
use their current network of users to parlay with marketing companies via
third-party developers to sell mobile web space.
And all of this is accepted with open arms by iPhone users,
hook, line, and sinker. Advertising? The iPhone’s apt for that.
