5 tips on choosing the right home based business

If you are thinking about starting a home based business, you are not alone. But how do you find the right home business idea and make it a reality? The following tips will help you narrow down your choices and give you advice on where to start. TIP #1: DISCOVER YOUR SKILLS AND TALENTS

If you enjoy what you do in your career, but don't want to work for someone else anymore, you may be able to take those skills and use them in your own business from home. There are many opportunities for business, marketing, PR, HR, and other areas online.

Many people draw from hobbies or skills such as writing, sales, and others when looking for the right home business idea. Asking yourself what you want to do and then finding out if there is a market for it are the first steps to take when starting your own business.

TIP #2: GET THE RIGHT TRAINING

Working from home can be scary if you don't know much about computers or the Internet. Since most home based businesses rely on the Internet for some or all of their marketing, you will have to learn how to conduct research, find markets that are interested in what you are selling, and learn more about communicating with people through email and web site content.

There are good marketing opportunities for those who need training and guidance to market their home business effectively online. Look for sites that offer training videos, tutorials, and live support. If you are unsure about a program, contact the Better Business Bureau to learn more about the company sponsoring the program.

Taking a class at a community college or technical school is another way to learn more about the Internet and e-commerce. Courses are in-depth and can also help you make connections in your community.

TIP #3: UNDERSTAND THE COSTS INVOLVED

Some home businesses cost more than others. This is why researching each idea you have will help you understand all the costs involved. When looking for a home business, try to find one that has little start-up fees and one that you can find support when you need it. Many home business web sites sell you an idea and then offer little or no help in seeing it succeed.

TIP #4: UNDERSTAND THE MARKET

Even if you have a great home business idea, that doesn't mean that there is a need for it. Many businesses especially businesses from home fail each year because of the lack of marketing research. Make sure your home business idea serves a purpose or fulfills a need. This will make you more successful in the long run.

TIP #5: GIVE YOUR BUSINESS TIME

Before launching your business idea, you should have a plan in place that allows you to take at least six months to see if it is profitable. Many people expect instant success, and while that may happen from time to time, it will take a few months before you begin to see lasting profits. Make sure you have enough financially to make the transition from working for someone to working for yourself.

How can I start home-based business? How can I start home-based business? - I am not sure what you mean by home-based and how my story can help but my home-based business is my web design business. I can work from home and go out to meet my clients. These times (When I'm out) is the most 'dangerous', because if clients need some files or if something didn't get through email, I'll need to find the nearest internet hot spot (i bring my external hard drive everywhere) to service the client or come up with an excuse. initially it was difficult, working from home and starting up. work was scarce but I knew it was only in the beginning. after 5 months, I have quite a constant flow of work but still the cheques are not that regular but its getting there. I met other people who has started home-based business and they range from travel agents to company secretaries. hope that helps
Insurance for Home Based Business? Insurance for Home Based Business? - Apparently homeowners insurance and liability insurance may not be enough to cover your at home based business. Especially if you are running the business out of a detached garage or other dwelling on your property. Does anyone have another type of business insurance for their home based business or know anything about this?
Re: How To Pick Keywords To Rank For Re: How To Pick Keywords To Rank For - Good advice Tanny, one can also use the same keywords and turn them around a bit so that the phrase is a bit different such as internet based home business, or home based internet business just as an example. MichelleJ

Re: Help needed! Re: Help needed! - Hi Jeema, First of all, I have to congratulate you on choosing to pursue a business based on what you love to do! I really do believe we can create viable businesses based on what we love to do. I've seen it proven time and time again. Many times, we can call upon our own creativity to create some forward motion right away. It is sometimes the simple, but unique ideas that can bring people incredible success. If you have any ideas you want to test out on us, please feel free to share. Sometimes your answer can be sitting right in front of you. Of course, we need to consider the practical and that's why we're here for you on the Forum. I too, am a writer, but I do most of my writing through my business. I combined several passions and brought it into one. However, I'm thankful there are other copywriters here who can share their tips. I've heard of others who have had success on elance.com as well. Are you looking at developing connections over the internet or other means? Have you developed a business name? Sometimes having a business name and website can suggest credibility to prospective clients. What are your natural strengths that you can utilize? For example, are comfortable on the phone? The reason I ask is that one person I know actually had great success cold calling. She had a stack of over 900 businesses she called and got business from 10% of them. Yes, that was a lot of calling, but she got the clients she needed and got on her way fast! Best wishes! Tami
