A Little Discipline On The NEWSS Could Save You, In Many Ways
America - and much of the rest of the world - is overweight. My home state of Colorado is perenially the "least overweight" U.S. state according to surveys, but that moniker itself is indicative of the trend... we used to call it the "most lean" or "most fit" state. People move here to take advantage of the outstanding climate and outdoor opportunities, so there are thousands of fit-as-a-fiddle Coloradans. But you can still go to any store in the cities and see grossly-fat people who seem to have blown up like balloons.
This is troubling in many ways, but it's also a fact that we're throwing away a lot of money maintaining those big bellies. Last March's edition of "Scientific American" notes that a person carrying seventy extra pounds will spend more than $30,000 extra for health care in their lifetime... and that's probably a shorter lifetime than the trimmer version of that person would've had! This is not trivial, especially in tough economic times like these. And experts say the global economy's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
Of course, many people think the government is the solution to this problem. In places like New York, nanny-state liberalism has stepped in to "help" by creating laws against consumer choices that are considered unhealthy. It's gone way beyond smoking regulations to include laws that limit your ability to salt your food, order a soda-pop, or get trans-fats. And we all know the federal government is in the process of taking over the nation's health care system, largely to "control costs."
However, industry experts (and those who follow the politics of the whole thing) agree that President Reagan was right when he said that government wasn't the solution to the problem, but rather WAS the problem. It still is. Most insiders agree that the effect of government intervention, on all levels, will cause society as a whole to pay even more for "health care" than under our previous excellent (though fixable) free-market system. And it won't shrink the bellies. People will still live fat and die early... they'll just wait in longer lines to do it. And the sort of "extra" health care that would save many of them will not be available at any price.
No, the only solution is personal responsibility, and more wide-spread discipline. If you think about it, most people are motivated to lose weight and get in shape when they see someone else at the office or shop do the same. Why not be that inspiration for the folks around you?
It starts with making the decision to change your body, and to revitalize yourself. You can do it. You just need to start with a little discipline in the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (just start by cutting the processed garbage out of your diet), Exercise (work out at least three times a week), Water (get your two liters every day), Sleep (get eight hours every night) and Supplements (take at least one good multi-vitamin, such as my favorite liquid nutraceutical). These five habits create a synergistic effect of improved energy, which will give you what you need to take each habit to the next level... and the benefits continue to build from there.
As the pounds slowly disappear, your mood and energy will improve, your optimism will return, and you'll even find your pocketbook gains weight as your belly loses it! And you won't be dependent on government bureaucrats for your very life.
