Cling On, Bitter Clingers!

Guest post by: Michael Hume

Article Overview: If we're going to borrow billions of bucks from our buddies in China and send those bucks to Egypt, I would rather we sent them directly to individual Egyptians and God-fearing Muslims... perhaps they have some bitter clingers in their own small towns who don't yet have a Walmart Super Center and could really use some of our money. Let them start businesses and make investments... after all, the U.S. government will tell you it's perfectly OK for anyone to make profits and build wealth, as long as they're not doing that in America....

Cling On, Bitter Clingers!

I'll Take Guns And God, You Can Keep The Hopenchange Three years ago this month, Barack Obama made a campaign speech in his run for the presidency in which he famously dismissed small-town Americans as "bitter clingers." He proclaimed that rural folks, discouraged by the evils brought upon us by the villainous George W. Bush, tend to cling to guns and religion where they'd be better served by the sort of sophisticated understanding of things like "hope" and "change" that he'd bring to the White House.

Despite that speech (or, in the case of city folks, perhaps partly because of it), we elected Mr. Obama the 44th president of these-here United States. Since then, I've been hoping for good things. But the way things have turned out so far in the new (radically transformed) America, I've decided I better get right with the Lord... and I might as well get a gun, too.

I hear-tell (in yesterday's speech by the president) that we're fixin' to send a few billion bucks to the new (radically transformed) government of Egypt. Now, some of my best friends are Egyptian, and I'm a big fan of Joseph's work there during the long-ago famine. But it seems the new Egyptian government is basically going to be the Muslim Brotherhood, and those guys aren't big fans of America. Are we sending them the money they'll need to replenish their own stocks of guns and religion? How is that gonna work out?

If we're going to borrow billions of bucks from our buddies in China and send those bucks to Egypt, I would rather we sent them directly to individual Egyptians and God-fearing Muslims... perhaps they have some bitter clingers in their own small towns who don't yet have a Walmart Super Center and could really use some of our money. Let them start businesses and make investments... after all, the U.S. government will tell you it's perfectly OK for anyone to make profits and build wealth, as long as they're not doing that in America.

Of course, we don't have to borrow the money... we're certainly printing enough of it. Maybe we could just drop cash bombs on small villages in Egypt instead. In another campaign speech, the president did make it clear that he didn't want us "air raiding villages and killing civilians" - but maybe he'd be okay with dropping rolls of freshly-printed Benjamins on 'em (as long as nobody got hurt, of course). And, if we act soon, those hundred-dollar-bills would be worth well over a buck each, so that might really come in handy for those poor small-town Egyptians.

A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking about real (devalued) money.

Meanwhile, back here in Small Town America, I'm going to cling on. I don't feel particularly bitter, but perhaps my newfound optimism over our generosity toward Egypt will make me a "better" clinger. And if our payments to them end up coming back to us in the form of heightened threats in the never-ending War On Terror, well, who knows? Guns and religion might both come in handy.
