Don't Get Sucked Into Class Envy
Hating The Rich Will Not Make You One Of Them
As I often do, today I heard a conservative radio host patiently trying to explain economics to a whacked-out young-sounding liberal caller. As this host often does, he kept asking the caller exactly how much of each wealthy person's dollar he thinks would be appropriate for the government to confiscate. The caller dodged the question, but one "answer" he gave was illustrative: "I haven't studied the numbers," the caller said, "but I know the rich aren't paying their fair share."
Hmm.
Now, how does he know that? Especially since, by his own admission, he hasn't studied the issue? The answer, of course, is that somebody told that caller that the rich need to be further soaked by our collectivist-leaning government, and the caller took that person's assertion as truth. It wouldn't be tough for an impressionable, un-studied mind to find such a statist influence; the "progressive" liberals in the U.S. have, over the last century, taken over every institution that influences the opinion of the American public (labor unions, the media, academe, the government, even Hollywood). So a professor told that caller what to think during an in-class sermon, or he heard it on MSNBC, or he got the idea from just about any TV show or movie he might've seen lately.
If he had studied what was really going on, the caller would've known that "the rich" pay far MORE than their share of the tax burden in the U.S., though the little they have left is more at jeopardy than at any time in American history. He'd know that fully half of Americans pay no taxes at all, dragged along by the dwindling number of productive entrepreneurs in our society. And he'd have heard that our current president and government, long the darlings of the left-leaning institutions listed above, have added more spending and debt to our current and future generations than all other governments in our past, combined.
It's thoroughly unsustainable, and that caller (and the rest of his generation) will pay for it with their very lives.
"I want to tell you how I feel about rich people," the caller declared. You hear that a lot among the young socialists out there. And you can predict exactly how they "feel" about those who've troubled themselves to build wealth. But what you never hear them say is what they THINK about the effect of wealth on our economy (and that of the world). They leave the movie theater or the college classroom with all these "feelings" about how unfair it all is, but without a clue about how to "think" about anything. And they certainly never learn what sort of deadly "real" poverty would strike if no one were free to pursue wealth and build the enterprises upon which our entire economy depends.
The progressive would-be opinion makers want to play to your sense of victimhood. They want you to look with envy upon those with more than you have, and to demand "your" share of what they've earned. They want you to spend your precious life energy being pissed-off at rich people.
Is that the life you really want? I have higher aspirations for you, as I have for my business-leading coaching clients. I want you to spend your life energy building a business, freeing yourself from virtual enslavement to government entitlements, and making the world a better place for all of us. And I will never ask for a share of what you produce through your own good efforts.
Times are tough, and the socialist leanings of our government are going to make them much worse before they get better. But don't despair. Entrepreneurs like you will weather the storm, and then lead us back to prosperity as a society. You won't waste your time getting into a lather about rich people. You'll be one of them.
