Don't Go Into The Water - Yet
Turns Out Mom Was Right About Eating And Swimming
It's important to maintain a consistent exercise program, of course, and now that the weather is turning colder in the Northern Hemisphere, you might be moving your program indoors. I have friends and clients who like to jog outside in the summer, but prefer to swim laps in the rec-center pool for cold-weather exercise. Great idea! But remember what Mom always said: don't go into the water right after you eat.
I've read studies that suggest you should always exercise on an empty stomach - preferably first thing in the morning - because your body gets more benefit from the workout. Hitting the gym is always my first order of business, six days a week. But it's probably even more important to have an empty stomach if your workout of choice is going to happen in the water.
This July's edition of the journal "Medicine, Science and the Law" reported findings that might interest you if you're a swimmer. It's a little morbid: the researchers basically conducted a review of 536 autopsies, and they found that nearly eighty percent of those who'd drowned accidentally did have visible stomach contents. Mom was right: it's dangerous to eat and swim.
The researchers suspected a link between eating before swimming and accidental drowning. Why? Blood is diverted to the intestine during digestion, and that can cause problems for the swimmer's circulatory system. If the blood flow to the brain is reduced (and if the effect is exacerbated by vigorous exercise), it's possible to lose consciousness. And if you're swimming, that could mean it's curtains for you!
Go ahead and exercise - jump in the pool, if that's the sort of workout you enjoy (your daily workout should always be something you enjoy and look forward to - or at least, something you don't dread). Just make sure your tummy's empty when you hit the water. If you can't swim your laps first-thing, wait at least three hours after your last morsel of food before you dive in. It's still not as effective as the early-morning workout, but at least you've reduced your risk of drowning due to circulatory problems.
Whether you own your own business, as many of my clients do, or you work a "normal" job, you have to make time for your health and vitality. A consistent exercise program is a good start, and an essential part of the five daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (start by just cutting the garbage food from your diet), Exercise, Water (get your two liters every day), Sleep (get eight hours every night), and Supplements (take at least one good daily multi-nutrient to give your body what it otherwise can't get in this age of processed and "engineered" foods).
Maintaining your own personal energy and vitality is crucial to keeping your business afloat. So make some waves. Dive into an exercise program you love. But make sure you're maximizing the effectiveness of your workout... and keeping yourself as safe as possible while you're doing it.
