Don't Worry: Eat Fat And Be Happy
Use The NEWSS To Stay Healthy With A Little Fat In Your Diet
Guess what! Not only should you pull up short of cutting all the fat out of your diet, you should actually make sure you're getting enough of the right kind of fat. Your very happiness might depend on it.
July's edition of the "Journal of Clinical Investigation" reported findings on the emotional relationship people have with what they eat. A study found that levels of sadness among participants who received fatty acids in their diets were half what they were in those who didn't get the fat.
Seriously? Eating fat makes you happier? I have to say, many of us knew that already.
It's a myth that cutting all the fat out of your diet is a good way to stay healthy. You need fat. You need essential fatty acids, and oils, to do your body good in several ways. Fat provides you with "good" cholesterol - high-density lipoprotein, or HDL - and many nutrition experts say having enough of the good cholesterol is even more important to your health than keeping your bad cholesterol low (though the "popular" view has long been that "cholesterol" is "bad" - period). Fat in the form of oil is also one of five things your colon needs in order to keep you properly cleaned-out (the others are fiber, water, salt, and probiotic "good" bacteria). And it's well-known that oils and oil supplements can help keep your mind and memory sharp.
Before you go on a fat binge, though, you should consume good fats in moderation. And trans-fats, normally found in processed food and usually the result of food companies "monkeying around" with fat molecules to create things like preservatives, are just about the worst thing you can put inside your body. Stay away from trans-fat!
It's easy, in our busy world, to get into the routine of eating convenience foods that are loaded in both good and bad fat... but which are not a good "deal" for your body. My clients tend to be busy people - some own a business, some work as managers and leaders, and some make a living through educated investing - and they often need coaching about the need to pay attentiion to their personal vitality. After all, your business comes to a screeching halt if you run out of energy (or, worse, end up sick or disabled).
Consuming good fat (and avoiding bad fat) is one tiny part of the key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. If you start by simply reducing (or, better, eliminating) the garbage-food from your diet, that's a good beginning on the "N." You should also exercise 3-6 times a week, get two liters of water every day and eight hours of sleep every night, and take at least one good supplement to give your body what it can't get from today's diet.
One of the first supplements you should add, after your multi-vitamin, is a good oil supplement. It'll provide you with an excellent baseline of "good" fats in your system, and that will make you healthier and, if these researchers are to be believed, happier too.
