Find Some New Appreciation Today
Feeling Down? Look For Inspiration In The Big Three
Take a few minutes today to find some new appreciation. You can do it any time, anywhere - I suggest you use at least some of the time you spend commuting to or from work. Turn off the car stereo (or the personal electronics, if you're on the bus or the train), and just reflect in silence on things you really love about your health, your work, and your family.
Start with your health. If you are healthy enough to work, you're lucky... and if you aren't, there's someone who's worse off. In my case, I say a little prayer of thanks for every day I spend without a serious asthma attack. Unlike people who don't suffer from breathing problems, I have come to truly appreciate every breath I take. How about you? Reflect a little and be thankful for what your body allows you to do every day. A new appreciation for your energy might inspire you to do more for your own vitality, such as exercising more, eating a little better, or at least taking vitamins with plenty of water. Whoever first uttered the old phrase "If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything" had a point.
Next, find something new (or rediscover something of which you may have lost sight) to appreciate about your job. If you have a job these days, you're lucky... and if you don't, be thankful for the blessing that you are able to make a new start. If you live in America, you live in a land of opportunity. You could start a business online with a very low investment... so be thankful, too, that you live in an era of such high-tech convenience! Even if you work a 9-5 type of job that feels more like a burden than a blessing, think about something you can appreciate about it (beyond the fact that you're lucky to have ANY job). Here's a hint: go back in your mind to the day you landed that job, and try to experience again the feeling of joy you had. You loved this opportunity once. Love it again! A new appreciation for your job might inspire you to do it better, and regardless of the difficulties (all jobs have 'em), that can only be a good thing.
Last, but certainly not least, rekindle your love for the person or people who're waiting for you at home. If you have a Significant Other, focus in on him or her. Push yourself to name something you truly love about your Sugar Muffin that you might not have fully realized (or, at least, something you haven't thought about for awhile). If you are single, how about your folks? Challenge yourself to come up with a new appreciation for whichever of your parents is bugging you the most these days! A new appreciation for your loved ones might inspire you to a greater love, and a greater overall happiness in your life.
Those are The Big Three, in my opinion. Folks I've coached who are generally unhappy have usually lost their appreciation for some or all of these key parts of their lives. Sure, there's lots of bad news out there that confronts you every day, from crummy weather to anxiety about the troubled global economy. But you have these three assets, these three sources of strength to help you fight the good fight.
If your pursuit of happiness has taken a hit recently, you aren't alone. But the road to recovery starts with appreciation. Think about how you can rekindle your appreciation for The Big Three in your own life.
