Focused Action Has The Power To Move You
Inspirational Leaders Don't Spread Themselves Too Thin
A new friend recently reminded me of the power of focused action to inspire. As many of my coaching clients have learned over the years, to inspire others (aside from being inspired yourself), you have to move them. The words "move," "emotion," and "motivate" all share common roots, and it takes inner movement - at an emotional "gut" level - to motivate action in the members of your team. My friend reminded me of that with a story about a lesson he learned from his late father.
He told me his dad used to clean the driveway by spraying away the leaves, dirt, and other detritus with the garden hose. As a young boy, my friend was hanging out with his dad one day, watching him hose down the driveway.
"See the nozzle on this hose?" his father asked. "It has several different settings. I can set it to 'spray,' or all the way over to 'jet,' and notice what happens to the water when I do."
The boy watched.
"You see, son, when I have my nozzle set on 'spray,' I can use the hose to put a little water on a lot of things. If I were watering the grass, I'd want to use that setting, because I don't want the grass to go anywhere. But here on the driveway, I want to move all this stuff, and the 'spray' mode won't work. Now look, if I set it to 'jet' mode, it focuses the water. Same amount of water, but look what I can move now!"
My friend lost his dad too early, and he has my condolences. But because he lost his dad early, he says he cherishes little lessons like the one he received on the driveway that day. It taught him something about the power of focus, and aspiring inspirational leaders would do well to take the same lesson.
Sometimes, you want to water the grass. Sometimes, when lots of people need a little "boost," it's appropriate to spread around your personal resources of time, energy, and attention... giving each blade of grass enough water to help it grow. Perhaps a CEO spends a little more time doing that - helping lots of people grow a little bit. But most inspirational leaders need to spend the majority of their leadership resources in helping a few people move a lot. It takes focused time, focused energy, and focused attention to the people and problems in your charge.
What goals are you pursuing? Getting into shape, renewing your health? Are you launching a new product or business? Are you recruiting a team to help your business grow and prosper? Any of these goals, and a host of others, require focused action. They require a focus on courage and integrity - either to move yourself, or to help others move forward in great strides. As the leader, the focus of the team is largely your personal responsibility.
Check your setting. Make sure you're applying enough focus to power the moves you need to make, for yourself and for those you aspire to lead.
