Get Outside Before The Snow Flies

Mother Nature Can Be Your Greatest Source Of Inspiration Technically, according to whoever's in charge of the calendar, today's the first full day of Fall. Whatever you were going to do this summer, if you haven't done it by now, the calendar says you've missed it.

In my case, I really meant to catch a baseball game at Coors Field in Denver this year. Never made it this summer. Looks like I'll have to wait a few months.

However, I've had a great and inspiring summer, and I hope you have, too. The calendar may say it's Fall now, but it is not too late to go outside and play. Let out the little kid inside you.

Too often, we get trapped in a routine that washes our lives in shades of grey trouble. Sure, times are tough (and they ain't getting better any time soon), but if you let every bit of your attention be consumed with worry, you've let the bad guys win. If you want to be inspired (and that's a prerequisite for being an inspirational leader), let your inner child play, regularly.

This week, because I own a business that permits me to work anywhere (and to take a good bit of time off), Colonel Wife and I have marched off to the mountains to relax and have fun. We're playing like we're five-year-olds (though our golf swings have improved since we were five). Yesterday, for instance, we played bad golf on a great day in one of the most beautiful settings God has created. It was bright and sunny, cool but not cold, breezy but not windy... in short, perfect. The day before was the same, as is today, and as the forecast says tomorrow will be.

I brought my little laptop, and Wife brought her crack-berry, but we're not spending that much time with our electronics. We're playing. As my eldest son has pointed out to me, too much of our modern lives are spent staring at glowing rectangles (TVs, computer screens, "smart" phones, etc.). You and I are staring at one now! And while some inspiration can be found in the things our glowing rectangles bring us, you can't beat Ma Nature for true and abiding inspiration.

So can you get outside and play? Can you find the inspiration you need to drive your work, to be at your best, to bring your most excellent self home to your family?

Go take a walk at lunchtime. Ride your bicycle this weekend. Walk the dog on a new route, and notice what's going on in this wonderful world in which we live. You might feel the sun on your face, and it might warm your soul. You might feel the breeze in your hair, and it might blow you away. And you might hear the rustle of leaves in the wind, and it might be God whispering some inspiration meant for only you.

Re: A picture (video) is worth a thousand words.... Re: A picture (video) is worth a thousand words.... - Phil, I switched to Mac leopard last year. I love it. It can also handle Windows on a separate hard-drive, so you get the best of both worlds. And if you are keen on doing more with video technology MAC is DEFINITELY the way to go. However, a note of caution - I have no intention of "upgrading" to Snow Leopard, which sounds bad. Also, on the Windows side, I chose XP rather than Vista.
