Have You Counted Your Blessings Lately?

Your Inner Entrepreneur Demands A Recount! 'Tis the season to count your blessings... just as it was last month, and just as it will be next month, and the month after. Each of us contains two basic characters - the Entrepreneur, and the Victim, and we'll each by dominated by the character we "feed." Counting (and recounting) your blessings feeds your inner Entrepreneur, and starves the lesser self I call your inner Victim.
Your inner Entrepreneur thrives on blessings. Whether or not you own your own business, it's the Entrepreneurial spirit that drives you if you are willing to take risks and make things happen... essentially, if you trust yourself (not that you don't FIRST trust your Maker). Entrepreneurs are bold, but collaborative. They're confident, yet they are curious about others, and are always learning. They push to win, but pull others along with them, believing we can all win if we'll only put forth our best efforts. Every day, the Entrepreneur strives to be the best she can be.
Your inner Victim, by contrast, hates thinking about the blessings in your life. Even if you do own a business, you're Victim-dominated if you don't believe you can solve the problems in your life (but are constantly criticizing the problem-solvers around you). The Victim does not trust himself, and does not trust anyone else, either. He's suspicious and critical of others. He's happy to let others run around expending their energy; he knows it's all pointless, that no one can win, that the game is rigged, that "The Man" has him down and will never let him up. For the Victim, it's not about being the best he can be. It's about being the same as everybody else, and complaining loud and long if he perceives anyone else gets something he didn't get.
For the Entrepreneur, blessings are evidence that life is good, that it's always getting better, and that success is worth going after. For the Victim, blessings are to be ignored. Victims see the success of others as evidence that life is bad, that it's getting worse all the time, and that "happiness" is not worth the pursuit (but, rather, is an entitlement of which he can never get his fair share).
When times are tough, your inner Victim might make a little progress in your mind and spirit. It might be harder to see the good in your life, and the obstacles to victory might look bigger. If you're not careful, you might slip back toward that borderline between your inner selves, and you might even find yourself teetering on the brink of the abyss of victimhood.
If that describes you, or if you're aware of even the slightest progress within yourself of victimhood, you must do what you can NOW to feed your inner Entrepreneur. You need to renew your courage - so get some en-couragement by counting your blessings. This is especially true if you hope to be an inspiration to others, as do many of my coaching clients who aspire to better leadership.
Talk to the person closest to you, and make an exercise of recalling as many of your blessings as you possibly can. Write them down. Reflect on them. Talk about them.
Too many times, people (and couples) spend too much of their energy talking and thinking about the challenges they face in times like these. That doesn't help. Be practical - do what you have to do to recognize and solve the problems in your life - but make sure your heart gets a balanced diet that includes plenty of encouragement, plenty of gratitude, plenty of blessing. You will thank yourself for every effort you make to feed your better self. And you should thank God, every day, for your many blessings.
