Health Habits: Can The Pop

Carbonated Drinks Can Easily Undermine Your Vitality I bet you didn't know that there's a "Morbidity And Mortality Weekly Report." Well, there is, and in an edition of the report this June readers got more statistics on how hard soda pop is on your body.

Pop is generally sweet, and the sweet drinks are linked (not surprisingly) to higher rates of obesity, Type II diabetes, tooth decay, and malnutrition (the more pop you drink, the less likely you are to consume essential nutrients your body needs). Do you drink a fair amount of caffeinated pop? That can cause sleep disruption, and even anxiety. If your carbonated beverage of choice contains sodium benzoate, drinking it can lead to hyperactivity and even DNA damage.

More good news (as you'd expect from a journal called the "Morbidity And Mortality" report): The U.S.A. leads the world by FAR in pop consumption. The average American drinks 216 liters of pop every year! Ireland runs a distant second at 126 liters (and no, the report does not consider beer a category of "soda")... Japan is way down there near the bottom of the Top Twenty, where the average Japanese drinks less than 22 liters of pop a year. If you have a mental image of the average Japanese person being more slim than the average American, there may be a good (and fizzy) reason for that.

Your twelve-ounce can of pop contains about 150 calories. Those are often "hidden" calories... since we don't chew them, many of us tend not to count them. But they definitely count. The M & M report says an average adult needs to walk non-stop for about 23 minutes just to burn the calories in one can of pop... and that wouldn't eliminate the other health risks posed by soda pop consumption.

Many of my leadership clients, whether they own a business or work as a manager, report being overworked, overstressed, and run-down. To maximize their effectiveness, they need to take charge of (and dramatically increase) their personal vitality. They need energy! And I often notice them sucking down soda pop as the coaching session proceeds.

If you need more energy, start by canning the pop. Go about three weeks without pop, and you won't crave it anymore - it's like magic! Focus at least a little discipline on the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (eat food found in nature, and cut out the garbage - like pop), Exercise (get at least three good workouts every week), Water (get two liters every day - you'll stop being "thirsty" for pop), Sleep (get eight hours every night, which'll be a lot easier if you've canned the pop), and Supplements (get at least one good daily multi-nutrient to give your body what it can't get from today's engineered foods and convenience diet).

Your business needs you, and you need your energy. If you want to put more pop in your work, put less pop in your body!

I only managed to get partway through the list today because my one year old was looking for some playtime but I did read the Zen Habits one - I love reading Zen Habits while relaxing at a coffee shop!

Permission Marketing - Seth Godin Think and Grow Rich seems more powerful each time I read it or dip into it. The 7 Habits not only offers some very effective ways to organize your life (which I have yet to master!), but also some great quotations and thought provoking statements including this by Nazi concentration camp survivor, Viktor Frankl: [i:2naxzsom]Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to choose.[/i:2naxzsom] Seth Godin's Permission Marketing is a good read for anybody seeking to understand how to approach doing business on the Internet in the right way with regard to winning people's trust.

Best incentive to offer employees Best incentive to offer employees - What's the best incentive to offer employees? Is it more health benefits? More vacation? Health club memberships? Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness - Thanks for singling this point out, Chris. One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.
