Health Habits: Get Fit, Save Money

The NEWSS Can Help Us Be Energetically Thrifty You know what they say: "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." That's what's happening with health care in the United States, and perhaps throughout the world of "Western socialism" today. The good intentions which may have spawned such government interventions as the recent American health law ("Obamacare") seek to reduce the overall cost to society of medical care. But, like most liberal or big-government initiatives, Obamacare is actually dramatically increasing health care costs while radically reducing the quality and availability of care.

Without a doubt, health care costs are astronomical; but recent research has shown that costs are going up, not down, in the aftermath of the push-through of the Obamacare law.

Take a look at what obesity costs us. According to a September report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, American states spend a LOT on taking care of obese folks: estimates range from a low in Wyoming of $203 million/year to California's high of more than $15 billion (with a "bill"). Again, intentions are good: from the first lady to the Democrat-dominated federal government, efforts are afoot to curb obesity and its costs. But those efforts, in practical terms, just aren't working.

And health care costs are expected to continue rising. Experts at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say health care spending will grow six percent per year through at least the year 2020, with the largest areas of cost growth beting in doctor visits, clinical services, and prescription drugs. You might understand these predictions when you consider that the government, and not the free enterprise of the private sector, will now by paying doctors and picking up the tab for clinics and medicines. Under Obamacare, if it's allowed to be fully enacted, the free-market incentives toward efficiency and profit will be gone, and costs will (as the president puts it with reference to energy prices) "necessarily skyrocket."

Unintended consequences. Outcomes which are opposite those the initiatives were meant to achieve. The road to "Hell."

Of course, the government-restrained private medical system in America, while it was the world's best, was not without its flaws. Possibly because insurers were constrained and left without the above-mentioned free-market motivations, the medical insurance racket has been out of control for years. According to October's edition of the journal "Archives of Internal Medicine," researchers at Mount Sinain School of Medicine discovered that an extra $6.7 billion (with a "bill") went to unnecessary tests and unneeded prescriptions... in a single year.

What can you do? Take personal responsibility for your own physical vitality. Start with the five key daily health habits I call "The NEWSS" - Nutrition (begin by cutting out the junk food), Exercise (get 3-6 good workouts a week), Water (drink two liters every day), Sleep (get eight hours every night), and Supplements (take at least one good daily multi-nutrient to give your body what it can't get from today's convenience-oriented lifestyle).

They also say "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure," and "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Protect yourself from the good intentions of a big, all-controlling government... get The NEWSS, and be part of a healthier society that's less dependent on government medicine.

I only managed to get partway through the list today because my one year old was looking for some playtime but I did read the Zen Habits one - I love reading Zen Habits while relaxing at a coffee shop!

Re: Millionaire or Happyness? Re: Millionaire or Happyness? - [quote="mphcoach":lgfsn9gb] I recently watched the movie 'In Pursuit of Happyness' and was rather disappointed that the 'happiness' achieved was merely the accumulation of wealth. [/quote:lgfsn9gb] Money definitely can make things easier, but of course the main wealth in life is health. If you do not have your health you do not have anything, as anyone who suffers from a chronic disease can tell you! 1) Health 2) Family (whether it's you and your relatives, or you and your own spouse and rugrats) 3) Enough money to live comfortably First thing a parent should do for their kid is start them with a savings account. Even if you only get 1% interest these days - and how obscene is that! - it gets them accustomed to the idea of saving. Too many people these days spend up to their income, and, thanks to credit cards, beyond. That's one of the main barriers to developing wealth - digging a pit when you're young that you have to spend the rest of your lfe digging out of.

Re: Which would you start: a Blog or Online Community? Re: Which would you start: a Blog or Online Community? - It is a difficult decision to make. Lets start it this way - What are you more interested in? Money? or Friends? or Both? If its purely Money, then Blog might be an appropriate answer. But consider this - It will be people (visitors) that will bring traffic to your blog and then Money will follow. This will be possible after a time and during this time it will be your friends who will be the starters. If you are looking for friends only, then its true that not many will be interested in knowing how you have beaten them in the game or the other way round. So it will be preferable to have a Forum where they can share ideas with you and others. But you can share your insider knowledge with them and invite comments from your Blog. You can also put up information on what others (including your friends) don't know about Tennis. The blog you create can provide News, Inside Information and also Techniques that can be used by the new entrants in the world of Tennis.
