Health Habits: Keep Smiling At Adversity

The News May Be Bad, But The NEWSS Can Help Economy got you down? You're not alone. A lot of people are struggling to do their jobs these days... or to find a job... or to keep their job. Add other bits of diversity to the struggle, such as a fight with a friend, a divorce, a death in the family, or the like, and it can be tough to keep a positive attitude.

In June, the Association for Psychological Science released findings about how negative thoughts can lead to depression. Most folks are able to fight through and "get over it," but others go on to develop major depression. Why? They get stuck on bad thoughts. They are unable to turn their attention away, though they know better. They keep going over their troubles, and negative thoughts develop into full-blown depression.

Meanwhile, a new report from the Heritage Foundation finds that the economy's recovery has been stalled, in large part, by the new Obamacare legislation. The new law creates massive uncertainty in the labor market: employers don't know what it will really cost to hire people and provide them with government-approved health insurance, so they're holding off. Companies are also motivated by Obamacare to stay small, in order to avoid the law's most onerous provisions.

Put it all together, and it's easy to get the blues these days!

To help, focus first on your physical energy. People who are vital and energetic are generally better able to fight off negative thinking. How are you doing with your daily health habits? The five key habits are the ones I call The NEWSS: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. If you've been laid off, give yourself a job (while you search for one that pays) to get your personal vitality in tip-top shape. Start by cutting the garbage/food from your diet, and by exercising every day. Get two liters of water every day, and eight hours of sleep every night. And take at least one good multi-nutrient supplement to drive your new health kick.

Beyond that, while you're waiting for your next paying adventure, take bold action to create some positive things in your life. Refocus on your key relationships. Read those books you've been meaning to read, especially the ones people might refer to in job interviews. Take on a new project - write a song or a story, create a work of art, try out for a play - something to keep yourself busy in a positive way. And start a business! These days, you can get into a solid home-based business for a relatively low investment, and it might just be your ticket to a new, free lifestyle.

You'll have negative thoughts - we all have our ups and downs. But don't let them dominate your life. The thoughts are yours, not the other way around. Remember that, and make sure you don't focus too much on the negative. Life's too short, and things will get better.

I only managed to get partway through the list today because my one year old was looking for some playtime but I did read the Zen Habits one - I love reading Zen Habits while relaxing at a coffee shop!

Permission Marketing - Seth Godin Think and Grow Rich seems more powerful each time I read it or dip into it. The 7 Habits not only offers some very effective ways to organize your life (which I have yet to master!), but also some great quotations and thought provoking statements including this by Nazi concentration camp survivor, Viktor Frankl: [i:2naxzsom]Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to choose.[/i:2naxzsom] Seth Godin's Permission Marketing is a good read for anybody seeking to understand how to approach doing business on the Internet in the right way with regard to winning people's trust.

Best incentive to offer employees Best incentive to offer employees - What's the best incentive to offer employees? Is it more health benefits? More vacation? Health club memberships? Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness - Thanks for singling this point out, Chris. One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.
