Health Habits: Keep Your Balance

Overall Success Doesn't Require Perfection As part of my duties as a business owner, I have to travel with some regularity. Usually, I'm very good at bringing my health habits on the road, and working to maintain my vitality from any location. But recently, I got out the door for a four-day trip without my supplements.

After a day or two, my body could tell something was different... my system is accustomed to the supplements I take. Luckily, though, my personal vitality program does not depend on any one daily health habit, including my usually-disciplined approach to supplementing my diet.

It's a good lesson to remember. You don't have to be perfect, but you have to have balance. You have to have a well-rounded, multi-faceted approach to maintaining your vitality. Why? Because whatever you do, your modern lifestyle is likely to make it tough to stay healthy. Not only are times demanding (requiring your best energy and efforts), experts say they're likely to get worse. So you have to take personal responsibility for your health.

The five most important daily health habits are the ones I call The NEWSS: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. You need a balanced, disciplined approach to all five. Watch what you eat, starting by eliminating all the garbage processed "food" that's so easy to grab when you're on the go. Exercise as vigorously as you can, at least three times a week (more is better). Drink two liters of water every day. Get eight hours of good sleep every night. And take good vitamin and mineral supplements (my favorite is a liquid nutraceutical that's engineered to maximize my body's ability to absorb its good stuff at the cellular level).

The beauty of the balanced approach is that you can slip up a little on one of the five habits without wrecking your vitality. The other four "pillars" will keep you propped up until you can get back on track. So though I went four days without my supplements, I'm okay, and I can easily get back on schedule when I get back to my home office.

Once you've made The NEWSS a regular part of your life, shoot for a discipline level of 80% on each of the five habits. Keep a journal, and give yourself a score each day, or at the end of each week.

If you can maintain a disciplined, balanced approach to the five most important daily health habits, over time you can't help but realize a nice improvement in your energy, your capability, and your general sense of well-being. You'll need those benefits, not just to survive the tough times ahead, but to lead the way to brighter days to come.
