Inspirational Leaders Endure To The Finish

Guest post by: Michael Hume

Article Overview: Though the good guys won a very big victory all those years ago, the dark forces of national socialism are still out there today. They're trying to regroup, and through more evolution than revolution, they're still after our freedom. Let's not let the sacrifice of generations of heroes go to waste; let's keep the spirit of the holidays in us, and let's make the most of the freedom we enjoy....

Inspirational Leaders Endure To The Finish

Christmas '44 Helped Make Today's Holiday Possible We're in the middle of the big holiday week here in America. Yesterday - Sunday, December 26th - our family enjoyed a happy, peaceful time in our Colorado home. Christmas falling on a Saturday this year made it easy to stretch the holiday to a weekend-long celebration, and the festive mood is likely to continue all the way through next weekend for us, like it will for most American families.

We're more than lucky. We're blessed.

I'm reminded of a group of heroic American men who didn't have it so good when the day after Christmas dawned sixty-six years ago. I'm a former U.S. paratrooper, and as such I have a lot of respect for the paratroopers of World War II who helped make possible the comfortable life we now enjoy in the free world. I have a special gratitude for the men of the 101st Airborne Division (even though that wasn't my unit) who had been besieged in the tiny Belgian town of Bastogne for weeks by December 26th, 1944. On that day, General George S. Patton's Third Army finally broke through to the encircled paratroopers, allowing supplies and reinforcements finally to flow in and wounded men finally to be evacuated. On that day, Hitler's last act of desperation ("The Battle Of The Bulge") was effectively thwarted, and the end of the war drew into sight.

I'm fortunate, as you are, that those guys had whatever it took to endure to the end of that ordeal. It was a sense of personal responsibility, of duty. It was leadership. It was real inspiration for which we must all be grateful even to this day.

One of those heroes lives in my neighborhood today. To him, and to all his buddies in this world and the next, I say a hearty "thank you" on this joyous occasion.

Though the good guys won a very big victory all those years ago, the dark forces of national socialism are still out there today. They're trying to regroup, and through more evolution than revolution, they're still after our freedom. Let's not let the sacrifice of generations of heroes go to waste; let's keep the spirit of the holidays in us, and let's make the most of the freedom we enjoy. Build and protect your nest egg. Start a business, if for no other reason than that you're free to do so (though there are many good reasons). And keep yourself healthy enough to enjoy many more holidays to come.

Do these things, and in your own small way, you are the hero of your life. And freedom loves nothing more than the enjoyment of its privileges by those with the personal responsibility and inspirational leadership to be their own heroes.
