Inspirational Leadership Requires Character
When You're Authentic, You Can Call Your Shots
Look behind the curtain at the background of any media personality, and you'll see things they don't want you to see. Scandal. Weakness. Tragic mistakes and, for lack of a better word, "sin." So it's beyond refreshing - it's downright weird - when a star not only pulls back the curtain, but gives you a guided tour of the skeletons in his closet.
One media personality caught my attention about three years ago, principally because everyone (and I mean everyone) was against the guy. Entire well-funded organizations had come into existence with the sole (or main) purpose of discrediting and slandering him. Any guy in the media who's so reviled by everyone else in the media, I reasoned, must be worth getting to know.
Turns out this guy had risen from humble beginnings, born the son of a baker in the state of Washington, and was now the center of one of the world's biggest media empires. And he, like all of us, was far from perfect. He'd been an alcoholic, and kind-of a nasty person. But unlike most of us, this guy's flaws didn't come to the attention of the public because others "told on" him. No, he made it his business to talk often about his disastrous past... and about the lessons he'd learned, and the new start he'd been given.
He made his points in a way that was often bombastic and off-putting. That said, after listening to him on the radio and watching him on television for just a few days, I realized he rarely said anything with which I could substantially disagree. He believed in God, in America as founded, and in such crazy concepts (these days) as personal responsibility, hard work, and entrepreneurship. He was able to predict nearly every major crisis the world's seen in the past several months (because, as he says, he understands history)... but his message was always one of hope and optimism. We can, and will, overcome all this. That was what he had on offer.
His television program shattered all records in his time slot, despite an unbelievable amount of resources leveraged against the sole object of ruining him. He was at the very top of the media world. And today, at the top, he walked away from it all. He resigned his lucrative television franchise, did his last live show on Fox News, and deliberately stepped off into the unknown to, as he puts it, stop "admiring the problem" and "waiting for someone else to lead." We'll see him on the internet, as I understand it.
Glenn Beck. The very name makes liberals cringe - just as they've been taught to do. But as Beck himself would say to the millions he's inspired, the liberals don't surround us. We surround them. And if you're one of the people who "hates" Beck (which, in my experience, means you've collected your opinions from the likes of Jon Stewart and have never actually seen or heard much of Beck himself), you can rejoice that he's no longer the focus of a top-rated TV show. But don't party for long. He's far from gone. And millions of fans will follow him anywhere.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight
- Hi Everyone,
Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out.
Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey!
It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap!
As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers!
What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is.
Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is.
In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level?
Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message.
I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum.
Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn!
In gratitude,
Tami

Different types of funding
- Business Relationship Funding
This is another source of funds that can be overlooked. It may be possible to introduce potential alliances to add value to both parties. It may produce an ultimate exit route in the medium to long term.
Joint Ventures: Requires a legal agreement embodying the deal and another company
Partnerships: Two companies collaborate with possible funding.
Joint working relationships: These are an informal partnership which may be more project specific where the parties can share resources.
Agencies: These can be geographical or product specific and generally incorporates a payment for the right to the agency.
Distributors: Very like an agency but may not necessarily involve up front payment.
Alliances: These do not require a separate company and can be embodied by a legal agreement to work together.
Trade investors: Otherwise known as Corporate Partnering. This can be a good way to involve a much larger company in the business with a view to possible trade sale further down the line.
Associates: This can be a loose arrangement with no fundamental commitments either way, rather like a preferred supplier.
Equity Swop: Two companies exchange shares to a similar value to develop both businesses.
Franchises: This can allow the business to grow without further direct investment.
Licensing: This involves licensing a product or service to enable others to sell it. This requires you to own the intellectual property.
