Inspirational Leadership: Start Something

Even If it's Just A Party, If You Build It, People Will Come As if the Fourth of July isn't inspiring enough on its own, the holiday is downright amazing around our house. Since you have to be an inspired person to be an inspirational leader, I recommend to anyone seeking to build their inspirational leadership that they start some sort of tradition like the one we have on Independence Day.

Years ago, I decided to start a business on the side, in the performing arts. I held auditions, picked some talented young singers, wrote and arranged several entertaining tunes, and launched a six-voice acappella group. In our fifteenth month, we booked twenty-two paid gigs, which is quite good.

In that business, you have to be prepared for attrition. Four years after start-up, I had an entirely new group of singers to break in. As they ramped-up on the material, I looked around for "low-risk" public performances we could take on. I didn't want to dilute the brand I'd built, so I hit upon the idea of creating "free" gigs through which the audience could get to know the new group without having to take a chance by buying a ticket. Since our speciality was outdoor shows, I wanted to create at least one show during which the group could "practice" in front of a live audience. I decided to host a neighborhood party on July 4, right in our front yard, and entice an audience to show up by providing hot dogs and beverages.

People showed up for the free food, and stayed for the music. That was twelve years ago, and we've hosted the party every year since, even for the last five years since the acappella group went "dormant."

That first year, we had maybe three dozen guests, and many of those were family and friends of the singers. I think our peak was over 200 guests a few years ago, and this week we had 125, which is about average.

Every year features five afternoon hours of hamburgers, hot dogs, pop, beer, socializing, and entertainment - all free. The Wife and I do end up in the hole money-wise, but we still think it's worthwhile. It's an awesome party.

Over the years I've hosted several different "acts" in the July 4 entertainment line-up. One of our dear friends once sang with The Platters, and he's done several hours of entertainment during the party over the years. Even though they are always heavily booked on The Fourth, I've always had a barbershop quartet as a contributor (until I couldn't find one this year). We've had a variety of bands. But over the years, our rock-star son Stephan has become the true headliner of the event. He somehow takes time out from his duties as an entrepreneur (he runs a rock school), and not only helps set up and take down the party, but provides a lot of the entertainment. This week, he and a couple of his buddies did it all... and the audience raved.

For the first time, we had a painter at the party. Stephan brought one of his friends who's a talented artist... the guy set up an easel next to the "stage" and worked on a beautiful abstract in oil throughout the party. And, at the end, refusing our offers of cash, he made a gift of the painting to The Wife and me.

It was an inspiring afternoon for everyone, and though our friends and neighbors include liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats, young people and older folks... no one gave even a passing thought to the things that divide us. For five hours Monday, we all took a break from that stuff, and just enjoyed each others' company as Americans.

Be an entrepreneur. Even if you don't start a business, start something... maybe even a party. You can't find a better source for inspiration, or a better chance to "practice" your inspirational leadership.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami

The 7 Greatest Truths about Successful Women The 7 Greatest Truths about Successful Women - Picked up a few books on my weekly trip to the library, thought I'd share their tables of contents. The 7 Greatest Truths about Successful Women: How You Can Achieve Financial Independence, Professional Freedom, and Personal Joy, by Marion Luna Brem. From the inside cover: In 1984, battling both cervical and breast cancer, and facing $500,000 in medical bills and a disintegrating marriage, Marion Luna Brem was desperate to find a way to support herself and her two young sons. Seventeen doors later, the blunt speaking manager of a car dealership in central TExas declared, "I've been thinking of hiring a broad." And with that invitation, Marion took her own first step on the road to financial independence, yada yada yada Today, this "broad" owns two automobile dealerships, an advertising agency, and a stake in a local bank. Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - According to Guy Kawasaki, he says "you should only hire and keep people that you'd hustle over to and engage in a conversation...Life is too short to work with people you don't naturally like-especially in a young, small organization" ("The Art of the Start" pg 112). I think the reverse is also true and I wouldn't want to work for anyone I didn't like or want to talk to if I saw him/her outside of the office. In addition, Kawasaki also says "Steve Jobs has a saying that A players hire A players; B players hire C players; and C players hire D players...This trickle-down effect causes bozo explosions in companies. If there is one thing a CEO must do, it's hire a management team that is better than he is" ("The Art of the Start" pg 101). Kawasaki's quote is definitely in favor of hiring the ambitious worker, but do most CEO's even have the humility to admit that someone is better than them?
