Just Say No To Adverse Drug Reactions

Get Into The NEWSS To Keep Your Vitality High The other day, we were watching TV and saw another of those ubiquitous ads from law firms who want to help you sue pharmaceutical companies for all the adverse reactions their medicines cause. Colonel Wife, who knows a thing or two about government administrative law, wondered aloud why these problems aren't discovered in the test phase, before drugs are sold to the general public. Doesn't the FDA force the pharma companies to conduct extensive (and expensive) pre-marketing tests?

Sure, they do. And the government's "oversight" doesn't stop there. This April's edition of the professional journal "Archives of Internal Medicine" published a new study by the University of Maryland which describes the FDA's activities after drugs are marketed. The Agency's web site talks about its AERS ("Adverse Event Report System") thusly: "[AERS is] designed to support the FDA's post-marketing safety surveillance program for all approved drug and therapeutic biologic products. The FDA uses AERS to monitor for new adverse events and medication errors that might occur with these marketed products." And in the last ten years, the study goes on to find, more than 2.2 million "events" have been reported to AERS, representing a 1.65-fold increase from the previous decade.

Here's how the system evidently works: unhealthy Americans have maladies... pharma marketers see a selling opportunity, and often work hard to find such revenue possibilities where none previously existed (as any company needs to do these days)... the R&D department cooks up a possible solution... seemingly-endless tests are conducted before anyone's allowed to try the new medicine... finally, the drug is marketed to doctors, and to the public... the FDA, which for some reason couldn't find problems before this point, find problems with the drug as it's used by the public... lawyers run ads and get new clients to sue the pharma companies... pharma companies' shareholders cough up for those settlements, plus the exorbitant R&D and testing and regulatory compliance needed for whatever's next in the pipeline.

That sounds like a system in bad need of reform. But instead, our government has "reformed" in a different direction, simply requiring all citizens to buy insurance against all the bad stuff that's inevitable in the systems they don't don't want to reform. Since the underlying problems don't get solved (and what would be the motivation of the FDA or the lawyers to solve them?), the costs stay high, the insurers get forced out of the market, and voila! You've got a government-run medical system, whether you wanted it or not.

You may not be able to "opt out" of this craziness, but you can take steps to make yourself less victimized by it. Start with the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. Cut the processed garbage-food out of your diet, work out hard at least three times a week, get two liters of water every day and eight hours of sleep every night, and take at least one good nutritional supplement to give your body a fighting chance.

See how long you can go before you become dependent on "government medicine," and how long you can avoid the adverse affects which have skyrocketed in the last decade and show no signs of slowing.
