Leadership Needs Inspiration

Leadership Needs Inspiration

"Black Sunday" In Denver Is A Sad Reminder I am a die-hard, life-long fan of the Denver Broncos, and even today, I'm not ashamed to say so. But yesterday was a sad day in Bronco Country. It'll go down as "Black Sunday," a day when the Broncos suffered the worst loss in team history to their hated rivals, the Oakland Raiders, at home in Denver.

It was 31-0 when the second quarter had barely begun, and the final score was 59-14. The Broncos had never (ever!) given up so many points to the hated Raiders. To suffer such a humiliating loss, especially at home and especially to Oakland, is a travesty that has the entire state of Colorado upset today; it will likely, eventually, cost more than one person their job (most notably the Broncos' head coach).

So what?

As I listened to the early half of the game on the radio (like most Broncos fans, I couldn't bring myself to absorb the entire contest), what struck me were the comments by our local sportscasters. The most memorable comment, made during the second quarter of the game when things were blackest for the home team, was that there was absolutely no discernable emotion - and no leadership - exhibited on the Denver sideline.

And as I leafed through the local paper this morning, the comment was repeated.

No emotion.

No leadership.

So, it turns out, at least according to experts who know the game inside-and-out, these things matter. Even in pro football. Emotion, and leadership.

If you have been a previous visitor to this space, you know that I have written extensively on both topics. I would agree with the football experts, and apply the principle to business or to any other endeavor: victory requires leadership... leadership requires inspiration... inspiration requires passion... passion requires emotion.

Whether you're shooting for success at your job, or starting a new business, or trying to create wealth in these tough times, or simply undertaking a personal health intitiative... you need inspiration, and that starts with emotion. You simply have no chance to succeed at anything challenging unless you truly care.

A better day will come for fans of the Denver Broncos. Someday (not too long from now, I hope), we'll even the score with the despised Raiders. But that day won't come before the team finds their motivation, their passion, their inspiration.

And a better day will come for you, too, for the same reasons. You'll find your true, deep, underlying emotion. You'll ignite your passion. And you'll become inspired to do the great things you are meant to do.

Whatever game you're playing, play it like there's a hometown announcer looking down on you from the press box, and judging your motivation. Your passion. Your inspiration. And don't let that person observe that there's no inspirational leadership on your personal sideline.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Describe Your Inspiration/Motivation - I'd like to open up discussion with the group to identify how us entrepreneurs keep you goals insight without loosing Inspiration for what got you going initially. Being an Entrepreneur can be a lonely road at times and I'd like to dig up and have people describe the fire they hold inside. I'm hoping that through this exercise I can acknowledge and become aware of my fire that I'm having trouble verbalizing.

Re: What inspires you? - Inspiration is nothing it is what you called to do? Some work for money, some work for satisfaction, some work because they have priorities in life. It is the passion to do something for achievement or to show that you can do it by using one's talent. I know there are people who are doing great things with their limited skill sets. So, my view point about inspiration is to Dream Big and try to achieve it. I would rather add "Listen to your self". Listen to Inner guide and follow it. You will reach great heights. Robert
