Renewing Limited Government: Regulations
Government Limiting American Citizens Is Backward
America's 40th president said many spot-on things about the massive growth of government his "progressive" foes always sought. One of my favorite quotes is this little quip Ronald Reagan had to say about the federal government: "It's like a baby. It's an alimentary canal with an appetite on one end and no sense of responsibility on the other."
Decades later, during the Barack Obama Era of ever-growing government, those words ring tragically true. The federal government seems to have an endless appetite for resources - it borrows and spends at previously-unimagined (and practically unsustainable) levels - and what comes out the other end gets dumped on the American people in the form of taxes, hurdles, and burdensome regulations on the free market.
As I've said in previous pieces, we desperately need to get back to the core founding principle of our country: commitment to limited government. Our strength and prosperity, as well as the peace and prosperity of the world we lead, depends vitally upon a renewal of limited government. This will require us not only to stop the progressive growth of the monster of government, but roll back the size of government as rapidly as practical. And one of the chief ways to limit government is to limit the regulation it dumps out upon the citizenry.
Regulations are the government's way of putting limits on the citizenry... and that's precisely the opposite of the Founders' intent. The citizens in America are to limit their government, not the other way around. Since the government does need to create and enforce some regulations, what's needed is a new system which limits those regulations to the ones truly essential to the Constitutional authority to "ensure domestic tranquility" in the nation. (By the way, a note to Demediacrats: "domestic tranquility" is a good thing... not just a slow news day.)
Limiting the government's ability to levy regulations is only one of at least ten limits I think should be renewed, or instituted, on our government and its sycophantic public institutions. Taken together, these regulations support one another; for instance, limiting the size of the federal bureaucracy to a certain number of agencies, employees, and programs (based on population size and GDP) will automatically help reduce the number of regulations that bureaucracy can realistically produce and enforce. I would further suggest that limits be devised in terms of the actual number of rules any agency can adopt, and on the number of words (or pages) that can be used to describe those rules. That will put a few government lawyers out of work, maybe, but it will force the government to run as efficiently as possible, limited to only the essential agencies, the essential programs, and the really-important rules.
This is vital, in order to eliminate the political turf-guarding and over-reaching that has become completely dominant in our progressive federal government. As the government monster grows, the people and markets diminish, and it's that seemingly-endless growth that's put us in the pickle in which we now find ourselves in America. On the other hand, if we can limit (even shrink) the government and its regulations, we could unleash the limitless potential of the citizenry. People will once again feel like taking a risk, starting a business, and working toward a prosperous future they can call their own. Investment capital would come flooding into America, and off the sidelines in our own country.
As Reagan also said, the progressive bureaucratic state lives by three simple rules: "If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it." America is over-taxed and over-regulated today... failure to renew limited government, including limits on those two favorite levers of liberal politicians, will create an increasing need for unsustainable levels of subsidy... and our nation, as founded, will cease to exist.
