The NEWSS Helps Keep The Bugs Away

Health Habits: Keep Yourself Strong... And Healthy The bugs are after me again. A few days ago, a digital virus took down my computer (despite two or three defense systems I'd installed). And this week, I have a cold virus that's taken up residence in my body. The computer had to be replaced; my body, which I can't replace, has to defend itself. And I'm happy to say the cold is mild, and already on its way to a quick defeat.

You're going to pick up bugs, such as cold viruses, from time to time. But how badly they affect you, and how long they stay around, depends on how well you're doing on keeping yourself vital and strong. The better your health habits, the better you'll fare against the bugs.

When I was a kid living in a small Colorado town, we had a great young doctor who'd decided to leave the big city and set up a practice in our little burg. He was a good doctor... but, like most people who are good at the technical work of a business, he might not have been as good at running the business itself. Like many, he might not have given thought to all the things entrepreneurs have to get right before he decided to start a business. But I was amused at his light-hearted way of handling things when business was down. Once, on a slow day during which I arrived for a routine exam, I caught him alone in his waiting room, arms folded behind him, looking out at the street. "Come on, bugs," he whispered. "Get 'em."

He knew what we all know: the bugs are out there, and sooner or later, they're gonna get ya. One of the best places for bugs to go hunting is, of all places, the hospital! A 2009 report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed that 60% of doctors' uniforms (and 65% of nurses') carry dangerous bacteria. One in five of the security cards hospital personnel carry were contaminated with a host of pathogenic bugs, including the superbug MRSA (an annual killer of thousands)! It's no surprise the report went on to say that post-operative bloodstream infections had increased eight percent, and that post-operative catheter-related urinary tract infections and certain other infections related to medical care were on the rise.

And the bugs do what they can to keep themselves in shape for the fight with your body's defenses, too. A recent edition of the journal "Nature" reported researchers' discovery of antibiotic-resistant genes in bacteria they'd found in permafrost that was 30 THOUSAND years old. Scientists have always been awed at how fast bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotic drugs... this latest report shows the bugs have been at it as a natural phenomenon far predating the modern clinical development of antibiotic drugs beginning less than a century ago.

So what can you do? If the bugs work hard to develop their resistance to medicine, you have to work hard to develop more resistance to them. Start a program of personal vitality with the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (begin by cutting out the garbage "food"), Exercise (get at least three good workouts a week), Water (get two liters every day), Sleep (get eight hours every night), and Supplements (take at least one good daily multi-nutrient to beef up your body's natural defenses).

You can't keep the bugs from doing their best to invade your life. But you can do a lot to keep their intrusions from derailing your business, or your mission, or your simple enjoyment of life. Stay strong, and chances are, you'll stay well.

Re: Christmas list website - need your input Re: Christmas list website - need your input - Bugs ... Bugs ... Bugs - anyone who tried to create a group and send invitations might have had problems with the pop-up box not having a submit button - I'll try and fix that tonight so by tomorrow it's working. Thanks for the head's up Jeremy!
Sabotage-ey! Sabotage-ey! - As Bugs Bunny would say! I make most of my money from the Google Ads on my site. Over 90% in fact. But I could be making more if there weren't certain browsers that allowed people to block those types of ads. Very annoying. I totally sympathize with people who want to block popup ads. I block those myself and if any do get through I close them without looking at them because I resent the intrustion. But google ads aren't the same! They're just sitting there, easily ignored, but can catch your eye if there's something of interest there. I had gone to the library yesterday - I'd made some changes to one of my websites and I always try to check the end result on the different platforms to make sure that everything looks the same and still works.. and I noticed that the library system also blocked google ads. Very annoying...I just hope the vast majority of casual webusers dont take it into their heads to do the same...
Re: Auto-DM's on Twitter Re: Auto-DM's on Twitter - Auto DM's can be bad if you include links in them. If you want to utilize the auto DM feature I would suggest only sending "automatic" message to new followers. You want to keep it short and to the point and absolutely no links. If you send links to people right off the hop they are more likely just delete the message rather than read it. You have to build trust in your followers before you start trying to get them to navigate to another page through links even if your offering them something "free". Your message should look something like, "Thanks for the follow, Look forward to your tweets" or something like that. If you want to give away your e-book just Tweet it or you can start conversations with people, build their trust then offer them the e-book. Hope this Helps. Dallas.
Re: Calling All Entrepreneurs Re: Calling All Entrepreneurs - Hey Kamna, In regards to "social media" marketing, Facebook,Twitter and blogs are definitely the leading players. However, my belief is that when you are successful at satisfying your guests, they will handle your social media marketing for you. Your restaurant may have the largest fan base in Facebook, but can you really say that all of them are, or ever will be loyal customers to your restaurant? At the end of the day, the most important factor that will make your customers to return, is a superior dining experience, which starts as soon as they enter into the parking lot. I am not saying that you should not focus on social media marketing. I have come up of two tactics that you may find useful, other than using Facebook and Twitter. 1. Check out "meetup.com". Meetup Helps groups of people with shared interests plan meetings and actually meet up offline. There are tonnes of groups within the GTA area, and the groups are always looking for new venues that offer good food and service. You can contact group organizers by email, or even join the groups that you are interested in and host the next meet up at your restaurant. 2. blogTO: my favorite local blog is blogTO. It has an extensive amount of reviews, and articles about all things Toronto. It has become an active community, and a great resource centre. Make sure that you are in the list, so that people can post reviews:) It would be a good idea, too if you can moderate the comment section to encourage participation. Ryann
